You don't have to call me darlin', Darlin'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEo8poVlQrM

WELL, IT WAS ALL
THAT I COULD DO TO KEEP FROM CRYIN’
SOMETIMES IT SEEMED SO USELESS TO REMAIN
BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN’, DARLIN'
YOU NEVER EVEN CALL ME BY MY NAME

YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME WAYLON JENNINGS
AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME CHARLIE PRIDE
AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME MERLE HAGGARD/ANYMORE
EVEN THOUGH YOU’RE ON MY FIGHTIN’ SIDE

CHORUS:
AND I’LL HANG AROUND AS LONG AS YOU WILL LET ME
AND I NEVER MINDED STANDIN’ IN THE RAIN
BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN’, DARLIN’
YOU NEVER EVEN CALLED ME BY MY NAME

WELL, I’VE HEARD MY NAME
A FEW TIMES IN YOUR PHONE BOOK (Hello, Hello)
AND I’VE SEEN IT ON SIGNS WHERE I’VE PLAYED
BUT THE ONLY TIME I KNOW
I’LL HEAR "DAVID ALLAN COE"
IS WHEN JESUS HAS HIS FINAL JUDGMENT DAY

REPEAT CHORUS

RECITATION:
WELL, A FRIEND OF MINE NAMED STEVE GOODMAN WROTE THAT SONG
AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS THE PERFECT COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG
I WROTE HIM BACK A LETTER AND I TOLD HIM IT WAS NOT THE PERFECT COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG BECAUSE HE HADN’T SAID ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT MAMA,
OR TRAINS,
OR TRUCKS,
OR PRISON,
OR GETTING’ DRUNK
WELL HE SAT DOWN AND WROTE ANOTHER VERSE TO THE SONG
AND HE SENT IT TO ME,
AND AFTER READING IT,
I REALIZED THAT MY FRIEND HAD WRITTEN THE PERFECT
COUNTRY & WESTERN SONG
AND I FELT OBLIGED TO INCLUDE IT ON THIS ALBUM
THE LAST VERSE GOES LIKE THIS HERE:

WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON
AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN
BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK
SHE GOT RUN NED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN

CHORUS:
AND I’LL HANG AROUND AS LONG AS YOU WILL LET ME
AND I NEVER MINDED STANDIN’ IN THE RAIN
NO, A’ YOU DON’T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN’, DARLIN’
YOU NEVER EVEN CALL ME
WELL I WONDER WHY YOU DON’T CALL ME
WHY DON’T YOU EVER CALL ME BY MY NAME

1. A timeless classic to be sure
Many years ago I happened across DAC playing live on stage. He was either too drunk or high to put on any sort of a decent show. It was kinda sad.

3. An ex-girfriend once commented on the fact that I called her "darlin'"...
...she really, really liked it, and made a point of telling me so.

She was so cool, I loved her. I wasn't ready for her. That's why I'm not married to her as I write this. A wonderful woman crossed my path but I wasn't ready. Didn't mean I didn't love her. Just meant I wasn't ready.

It takes all kinds of shrimp to make a gumbo.

People like what they like and don;t like what they don't like.

Elaine loved being called "Darlin'," and I loved CALLING her "Darlin'."

15. Shades of Ian Hunter
We walked to the sea, just my father and me
And the dogs played around on the sand.
Winter cold cut the air, hanging still everywhere
Dressed in gray did he say hold my hand?
I said love's easier when it's far away
We sat and watched the distant lights.

We're two ships that pass in the night
And we smile when we say it's alright.
We're still here, it's just that we're out of sight
Like those ships that pass in the night.

There's a boat on the line where the sea meets the sky.
There's another that rides far behind.
And it seems you and I are like strangers a wide
Ways apart as we drift on through time.
He said it's harder now you're far away
We only read you when you write.

We're two ships that pass in the night
We both smile when we say it's alright.
We're still here, oh it's just that we're out of sight
Like those ships that pass in the night.

We're two ships that pass in the night
We're two ships that pass in the night
We're two ships that pass in the night

8. Cuddlin under the moon and the pecan trees
Cuddlin' under the moon and the pecan trees,
Changing secrets, only the wise old owl sees
What's there and not, what's bright and hot,
In between me and my Darlin'

There's magic in eagles winging overhead,
Til I met Darlin' I thought I was dead,
It's a brave new world since I met that girl,
A brand new world, My Darlin'...

12. You don't have to say you love me, Just be close at hand.
You don't have to stay forever,
I will understand.
Believe me, believe me
I can't help but love you
But believe me, I'll never tie you down.

22. I just recently found out that John Prine co-wrote that song
along with Steve Goodman.

Not surprising; it's definitely Prine's sense of humor.
