Me - 1, Mice - 0
Operation De-Micing has begun. They've penetrated to the garage and possibly into the wall over it (judging from scratching sounds). No other signs in the basement or attic or living quarters.

One bag of bait was placed last night. 100% of it was eaten. Another one is out, once the feasting stops I will seal up any gaps in the garage to keep future ones out. I am winning.

Now I am off to buy new door sweeps and a garage door seal...

3. Our neighborhood cats are worthless for this
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 02:44 PM by midnight armadillo
Our neighbor's cats come and visit, but they just take up space on our steps and soak up sunshine and aren't too inclined to do much of any usefulness. I would love a cat (my first pet at age 6 or so was a calico I named Patches) but my wife & older son are very, very allergic.

Hm, I don't think we have any python allergies...I could just turn one loose at night.

2. Unless they eat the bait
and die inside your walls leaving the house to smell pretty rank for about a week. Bait only draws them, really, and there's no guarantee where they are going to die.

4. I considered that
Since the weather is cold and getting colder and drier, they should merely desiccate in the walls. I hope.

There's no easy fix here. I trapped mice in my old grad school lab and caught 14 of them over a few weeks until there were no more signs of them, but I didn't have to sleep there at night!

5. What's wrong with the old snap traps baited with peanut-butter?
If they will come out for the poison I would think that they would come for the peanut-butter and then the bodies are easy to dispose of.

6. New approach
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 03:21 PM by Rambis
Got this tip from somebody who winterizes cabins. Float sunflower seeds on top of a bucket full of RV antifreeze. Put a ramp up to the bucket, they climb up into the antifreeze and it pickles them so they don't smell like they do when they die in your walls.

IF YOU HAVE PETS THAT CAN GET TO THE BUCKET DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!
