Well just now there was one of my coworkers over here, very sweet lady, very religious but one of those religious people who just lives their life and doesn't try to push her beliefs on others, specifically me.

BUT we were talking about the shooting thing that just happened in Orlando and the whole Ft. Hood deal. I made the comment that I heard this morning that the shooter in Ft. Hood was Muslim and said, "oh boy that's going to get things stirred up big time".

or some such brilliant comment, I can't be arsed to recall my exact wording.

Well suddenly out of this sweet, nice, polite little southern lady sprang forth a shockingly vitriol litany of hate.

I was speechless, actually struck dumb. No one here **knows** me but trust me on this, for me to be shocked into silence is...rare, seriously rare, Poisson distribution rare.

Apparently "we" should not allow "them" to serve in our military.

Sadly this all forces me to defend Muslims and let's be honest here, as a woman I'm not exactly a big fan.

Right after 9/11 I was working with kids at the Y. One of the kids was clearly spewing some garbage that he heard at home. Normally I just let that go because it's best to stay out of what people teach their own kids. In this case though I just couldn't let it go:

"so all Muslims are bad and evil? All of them?"

"oh yes all of them"

"What about Fahim and Walid?"

"They're not Muslim."

"I promise you they are."

"can't be"

"Oh yes they are and consider this, right now RIGHT NOW Walid is holding up YOUR little sister so she can get a drink from the water fountain. Still think they're all evil?"

"Well..."

5. I am a Muslim and am very frustrated by the media's attitude

They hear an "Arabic-sounding" name and IMMEDIATELY assume the guy must have been a terrorist. I'm hearing from the media that he apparently shouted "Allahu Akbar!" during the shootings, but I'd really like to hear that firsthand from an eyewitness. I condemn his actions, and if investigation shows that he has terrorist ties, then let the truth win out. But I very much resent the swift jumping to conclusions.

Last year my sister and I were poll greeters during early voting in Valley Ranch (Irving, TX), and at least two little old ladies pulled up and said they "just had to tell someone" that they voted for Obama. A friend said they probably didn't have anyone they could tell about their vote because it would NOT be received well.
