Which is better - Pop Music or Rock Music???
Edited on Thu Nov-05-09 04:23 PM by Hawaii Hiker
Why is it that people who prefer rock/classic rock always have such disdain for pop music?....I mean geez, can't i say Avril Lavigne is a talent without hearing how much she sucks from rock purists....On Howard Stern Show today, Howard was saying he likes the Miley Cyrus song "Party in the USA" & some of the other staff were laughing at him, the "Springsteen is the only true rock star" crowd...."Party in the USA" is a much better song than "Born in the USA"....I could piss off 2 co-workers to no end if I told them that, they would truly get angry beyond belief...

Go ahead laugh I like pop music, Avril Lavigne, Madonna, Lady GaGa, Paramore, etc..Of course, some of this is subjective....Is U2 pop or rock??....What about Cheryl Crow?..etc..

Yes, there are some great rock songs, but i prefer pop :woohoo:

1. There are only two kinds of music: good and bad.
And both exist in every genre.

Yes, that's right EVERY GENRE!

From classical to rap, heavy metal, country, etc.

I like some pop. I'm really digging Lady Gaga. I think she's pretty darn creative.

And I love, Love, LOVE MADONNA!
I make no apologies for that. (I'm listening to "La Isla Bonita" as I type this).

3. I love pop

I don't understand the hatred of pop either. I also don't get the appeal of "Party in the USA." I really don't like that song.

I like Avril too. I'm looking forward to her new CD which was suppose to come out this month. I guess it has been pushed back because I haven't even heard the first single yet.

My favorites are Britney, Kelly Clarkson, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Avril, Michelle Branch, and Pink.

4. Pop is safe, synthetic and manufactured
That's why a lot of people don't like it.

Good rock is none of those things.

Of course Power-Pop is another thing altogether.

Sweet music that's acceptable to like since the masses haven't found it yet.

5. I think rock is just as manufactured
I think some people view the music they like as less manufactured than it really is.

9. Oh, baloney
The Three O'Clock
Big Star
The Connells
The Bangles
B-52s
Translator
The Byrds
dBs
The Go-Betweens
Marshall Crenshaw
Gin Blossoms
New Order
The Ramones

None of these acts appeal to the "rawk on, dude" crowd. The Ramones draw heavily from early '60s bubblegum; New Order fuses dance and disco with moody postpunk. All wrote accessible, intelligent songs laden with hooks, pop in the best sense of the term.

6. I love both Pop and Rock
Edited on Thu Nov-05-09 06:39 PM by AsahinaKimi
Especically Jpop and Jrock. Throwing in Metal, Visuel Kei, Ska bands, and anything that comes out of Japan including the very cute stuff. It just makes me happy to listen to it.

***Btw: how much do I love it?
Enough to have formed my own forum...
The Ichiban Jpop Kurabu.. we have over 6,000 members world wide.

13. I don't know about Jpop
I hear it all the time in stores and other public places, and once in a while on a music show, but it sounds all the same to me. I used to like Tube (kind of like the Japanese version of the Beach Boys), but their music since 1994 or so has seemed overcontrived. Tommy february6 had some good songs fairly recently, though, like Je t'aime and Magic in Your Eyes. Going back a little further, Off Course (I call them the "Japanese Beatles") came out with some pretty decent songs, like Sayonara and Tsuppashiru Dake.

12. I was thinking pop as defined by the OP.
I would call all of those rock.

New Order is probably the blurriest line.

11. I think a lot of people are turned off by pop because it's probably the most cynical of all music.
Not all pop, mind you. There are some artists with genuine creativity and talent. But, you also have a disproportionate number of artists that are simply nothing more than formulaic creations of some corporate entertainment focus group. They are cynically stitched together to make money.

So many of them really are nothing more than a pretty face with rudimentary skills. Very few write their own songs. Very few actually sing without the overpowering use of autotune and other digitalizing techniques. For the most part the artists are completely interchangeable.

Not the genre. They're songs that I like and don't like in every genre.
