memory foam mattress topper question
Mine arrived today and I am very excited for my brand new feeling bed. After unpacking it, directions say to let it plump up and regain its original shape for several hours. They suggest letting it air out in a well ventilated area to dissipate any of the plastic and new foam odor. It does not, however, say how long to air it out. It has been a good 4 hours and I'm wondering if that is enough.

1. Does it still smell bad?
Does lying on it make you nauseous? give you a headache?

They tell you that because some (very few) people report headaches and illness from them off-gassing plastic chemicals. There is not right amount of time because it's entirely a result of sensitivity...mine never bothered me, my mother's boss ended up tossing hers because it never went away after like 2 weeks.

2. We let our Temperpedic bed air out 12 hours
It was still a bit whiffy but we needed to go to sleep.

3. I would do it for as long as practical
in other words bring back as late as is possible or convenient.

4. thanks all
I suppose I can wait until bed.....that will be a good 15 or 16 hours.......I don't think it smells anymore, but I'll get some objective opinions from family members later. I wish I had realized I had to do this or I wouldn't have unmade my bed, tossed my old topper and turned the mattress and such.

5. I have had Memory Foam toppers (Carpenter Co.)for several years.
They have made my sleeping problems so much easier to cope with. Back problems for years.

You should let them sit for at least 8 hours. They smell will dissipate and the foam will expand to its proper size. They are packaged so tightly that the cells compress. It doesn't take long to attain the proper shape.

You should find sleeping on these toppers great. Everyone who has slept on beds in my house comments positively about them. I have also found out that the big, expensive Memory Foam mattresses are really of no greater value than a good, flat mattress(no sags) with a 3" topper. The foam only compresses so far.

Don't forget to turn the topper over and also rotate it end to end periodically. The foam will last longer that way.

Sweet dreams!

12. I think its a matter of degree
does the smell bother you? We got our bed before last Christmas, and it still smells like foam. But it sleeps well and I don't care.

13. I had a memory foam mattress topper..

After a couple of months on my bed, all it wanted to do was to forget what it had been through. Eventually, it became depressed and despondent and started drinking heavily. I sent it to a clinic for post traumatic stress disorder.

14. I slept like a baby!
4" foam topper, gel filled pillows, new sheets, washed comforter and mattress pad, pillow protectors. I aired it out for about 8 or 9 hours. It didn't seem to smell after that, maybe a faint odor, but I think I was just looking for it. Anyway, I woke up in the same position I went to sleep in....I can't remember the last time I did that. Not an aching bone in my body this morning. Love my new bed!

18. Does it feel warmer than a regular mattress?
I want us to get one but am worried that it might get really warm from body heat in the summer.

I'm so glad you posted about this!

But not too bad. You learn to move around a little bit.

I think it may have been a little warmer, so hard to tell in the winter with the heat and quilts and such. AC baby, the bed is soooooo worth it.

27. The good ones will not get hot in the summer. The cheaper "foam"
toppers will sometimes feel like they are heating up. My neighbor bought what she thought was a memory foam topper and she said it felt like it got warm. When she looked at the label, she determined that she bought the wrong thing.

The toppers labeled visco(s) elastic is real memory foam. We have had ours for years and never felt as though it heated up in the warm weather. We do not have air conditioning. We paid around $150.00 for our 3" topper make by Carpenter Company. I'm sure there are others. Most of the ads seem to make reference to the fact that this material was developed for use by astronauts. Whatever the manufacturer, I'm sure they will make reference to this fact. If you Google "Memory foam toppers" or Visco(s) elastic toppers, you should get some good info.

28. Thanks a million
We have a Denver Mattress store not far from the house. I want to go down there and check out their products. They have mattresses that are Visco Foam. So I'll be sure to talk to them about my concerns.

Given that you don't use air conditioning and are comfy, I'm feeling better about the foam. :hi:

29. I bought my Novaform memory foam topper from Costco
put it on my bed, and was sleeping on it six hours later. It had some of the new foam smell for a few days, after that it either dissipated, or I got used to it.

The coil spring mattress that I put it over was still in good shape, but it's so much better now.

32. That "smell" is actually an anaesthetic gas

They put it in tiny bubbles in the mattress topper to knock you out. People think the mattresses work better, but it's only a side effect of the sleeping gas.

Really.
