90s fashion...
Kinda sucked.

Not as bad as 80s fashion, but it's close.

Going through old photos from the 90s, you get that distinct 90s feel. You know, hats with flat bills, large t-shirts you tuck in and shorter-than-they-should-be shorts.

PERFECT 90s look:

Oh and the hair...don't get me started on the hair.

Crazy.

1. One thing that intrigues me about growing older...
is the ability to identify the "look" of a decade. I don't seem to be able to do it until about 20 years out. I can clearly identify 80's fashion or 70's fashion or 60's fashion, and so on. However, I still don't have a clear idea of what characterized the 90's or how it differs from where we are now.

I figured it would become clearer to me in a few years, as we distance from it. Your post is the first reference to a particular 90's style that I've seen anywhere.

I figure that people who pay attention to fashion are probably better at this than I am. Do other people have this experience?

2. There's a break right around 1992, a long middle period, and another break around 1999

3. Flannel!
That's definitely 90s.

I think the early-90s had a lot of holdover from 80s fashion. Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Will Smith (all rappers, I know, but they sparked much of the fashion trends).

Mid-90s was filled with flannel and big shirts and generally what I mentioned above (those photos are from 1994).

Late-90s is similar to today. Maybe a tad different.

4. Oh, and one of the fascinating things about the show Twin Peaks is that it was right on the cusp
So several folks are living in the early 90's, and several folks are living in the later 90's.

(Annoyingly you have to click the link. Boo.)

(One might even make the argument that the show helped push fashion down the plaid path. :P )

5. The 1990s look (at least mid 1990s look) wasn't that bad.
I mean, flannel shirts? Rugby shirts? Extremely tame when compared to the shit that came out of the 1980s. And much better than that whole skinny jeans stuff of today.

My opinion, take it or leave it, is that the mid 1990s was the pinnacle of American culture, and we have only regressed and continue to regress from that point.

Of course, that's slightly jaded as a result of reaching my formative years in the 1990s.

7. I don't mind a good deal of today's fashion...
The skinny jeans are a bit much. I do like how polos are in style again, though.

8. That look needs to die, and soon.
Low-rise jeans only look good on teenage girls. What happened to mid-rise? Not mom-jeans, but jeans that come to the waist or just below?

9. NONSENSE! I don't like "things being left to the imagination"
I prefer it all hanging out, in beautiful mammalian glory!
