Who here has read "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert?
And what did you think?

Self satisfied, smug twaddle?

Or interesting, useful examination of humanity?

I picked it up at our local Goodwill, prepared to be mightily irritated (probably because the word "pray" makes me uncomfortable, and because Julia Roberts is in the movie adaptation) but curious about the book nonetheless. I have found parts of it very funny and enjoyable.

 Anyone else?

1. I read it and
thought it was pretty self-absorbed, but then I had to stop and think...that was what it was supposed to be.

2. yeah, true
lots of reviews attacked her, but it was a description of HER year in Italy, India and Indonesia.

Did you find any of it interesting at all?

It seems to me she was a bit of a mess, much of the mess was of her own making. And it's hard to get on board with someone's journey of self-discovery after she makes sure you know she had no financial worries, ever.

But still, it's been good armchair travel so far.

8. I can't quite understand why she was in such a tizzy...
at the beginning of the book / can't quite relate to someone who has really a very solid life and yet is so self-absorbed. But I'm glad I'm reading it.

4. I enjoyed it quite a lot
I was particularly fascinated by her stay in the Indian ashram, as I am somewhat familiar with the Muktananda sect she was part of. The book chronicled a voyage of self-discovery.

7. I'm in the middle of her time in India, finding it very interesting
I really am clueless about much of Indian culture, traditions, meditation, etc... and the book is encouraging me to learn much more.

5. I avoided it for a long time because of the word "pray" in the title. But my sister gave it to me
so I read it and I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed it, and identified with a lot in it.

6. same here!
I shied away from it because of the title; I avoid "pray" at all costs. But I'm glad I've given it a chance b/c I'm enjoying it so far. It's helping me crystalize some thoughts and ideas. :hi:

9. I loved it and am actually
reading it right now for a second time.

(I read it while I was going through my own divorce --AKA, a bad car accident every single day for two years...except that mine was 3.5 years-- so I completely related to the whole beginning part.)
