Question for Twitter experts
If you make a tweet about a subject, how do you do it, so everyone (and not just your friends) are able to comment about it? I tried using the # symbol but, if no one has made the subject before, the subject just does not exist.

Lets say you wanted to do a tweet that comments about the DU lounge on twitter. You might put #DULounge but not everyone will see that..

I am a bit confused. I know that your friends will see your tweets and comment but if others are not following you they won't see your tweets or be able to make a comment? Oh and I have the Privacy thing off too by the way.

I guess what I am asking is how do you make a public tweet that everyone can read and respond to? Is it possible?

1. Anyone can read and reply to your Tweets if they're unprotected
But in order to get whomever to show up and comment, they have to be looking for your #

You could post links to you tweet to your buddies on DU

3. There is one caveat
If you use a trending hash you're also more likely to attract a wider crowd. That is, if you comment on what ever is popular during that time

5. It's the list of trends listed on the right, those are the most popular
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 06:16 PM by MrScorpio
Anyone can slick on those trends to pull up al the tweets about that trend

Let's say that "Sex" is one of those trends, if you want to comment on sex and get people to see your tweet, type this in your tweet "#Sex" and it's added to the trend.

I tried doing that..I didn't see my message anywhere..after doing so. I wondered if it got on there at all. But let me ask you..How do you START one of those topics to begin with? Is it possible or does the Twitter staff do that?

7. It's impossible to start a trend singlehandedly
Those trends are made based on a high amount of tweets from many tweeters keying in on a particular word or phrase

You can try it, but you're going to need a gang of many to back you up

10. Hash tags (#tags) are used to label your Tweet so other people can search for them.
There is not concept of subjects or threads on Twitter... #tags make it easier for people to find things when searching... and the #tags really depend upon everyone agreeing to use a particular tag or tags when talking about a certain subject.

If a bunch of people are tagging their Tweets with a #tag, then that #tag will show up as a trending topic due to it's current popularity.

The key to making your #tag popular is to get others to re-tweet (re-post) you.

12. It's #DemUnd for DU related tweets
You need to check what the best hashtag is before you tweet in my experience.
