1. John Lennon's "Imagine" is a beautiful song.
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

2. "Dear God" by XTC
"Dear God"

, hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
but all the people that you made in your image, see
them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get
enough to eat from God, I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but... I feel that I should be heard
loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
and all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting
in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God,
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
mankind after we made you? And the devil too!

, don't know if you noticed, but... your name is on
a lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you
should take a look, and all the people that you made in your
image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain't, and
so do you, dear God, I can't believe in I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always
letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the
whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
and if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon
my sleeve. If there's one thing I don't believe in

it's you....

3. "Blasphemous Rumours" by Depeche Mode
Girl of sixteen, whole life ahead of her
Slashed her wrists, bored with life
Didn't succeed, thank the Lord
For small mercies

Fighting back the tears, mother reads the note again
Sixteen candles burn in her mind
She takes the blame, it's always the same
She goes down on her knees and prays

I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find Him laughing
Girl of eighteen, fell in love with everything
Found new life in Jesus Christ
Hit by a car, ended up
On a life support machine

Summer's day, as she passed away
Birds were singing in the summer sky
Then came the rain, and once again
A tear fell from her mother's eye

I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find Him laughing

5. "The Hand That Feeds" -- Nine Inch Nails
You're keeping in step
In the line
Got your chin held high and you feel just fine
Because you do
What you're told
But inside your heart it is black and it's hollow and it's cold

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?

What if this whole crusade's
A charade
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood
On which we dine
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?

So naive
I keep holding on to what I want to believe
I can see
But I keep holding on and on and on and on

Will you bite the hand that feeds you?
Will you stay down on your knees? <8X>

15. Find some 'Entombed'
"Wolverine Blues" is a good album to start with - it's hardcore thrash metal with anti-religious lyrics.

Here is "Out Of Hand", from that album:

Fools gather 'round to watch me bleed
But there are things you'll never see
To protect and serve one nation under god
A nation in which no one's free

Their flesh begins to rot
What's left of what they've got
A boring life is getting old
Mischief won't turn to gold

By going back to burning books
Ripping apart things that do not fit
One times one equals nine
Your make-believe reality is full of shit

Jesus Christ
Lord of flies
In disguise
Fuck!

It's fucked to hear one idiot's words
But worse to see others believe it
Fucked up minds in fucked up times
It's up to you to foresee it

Jesus Christ
Lord of flies
In disguise
It's all built upon lies
Out of hand
Is this a fucking joke
Out of mind
And it makes me fucking choke
Fuck!

4. Judith by A Perfect Circle
You're such an inspiration for ways
That i will never ever choose to be.
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your savior has abandoned you.

Thank(fuck) your god.
Your lord, your christ
He did this,
Took all you had
And left you this way.
Still you pray, never stray,
Never taste of the fruit.
Never thought to question why.

It's not like you killed someone.
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side.
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed.
He did it all for you.
He did it all for you.

Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you.
Pray to your christ, to your god.
Never taste of the fruit,
Never stray, never break,
Never choke on a lie,
Even though he's the one who did this to you
Never thought to question why.

It's not like you killed someone.
It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side.
Talk to jesus christ as if he knows the reasons why
He did this all to you.

He did it all for you.
He did it all for you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faop1oSAkpc">Asylum by Crass (Crass is a British punk rock band, but this piece is spoken word.)

I am no feeble Christ not me. He hangs in glib delight upon his cross, above my body. Christ forgive. FORGIVE? I vomit for you Jesu. Shit forgive. Down now from your cross. Down now from your papal heights, from that churlish suicide, petulant child. Down from those pious heights, royal flag bearer, goat, billy. I vomit for you. Forgive? Shit he forgives. He hangs in crucified delight nailed to the extend of his vision, his cross, his manhood, violence, guilt, sin. He would nail my body upon his cross, suicide visionary, death reveller, rake, rapist, lifefucker, Jesu, earthmover, Christus, gravedigger, you dug the pits of Auschwitz, the soil of Treblinka is your guilt, your sin, master, master of gore, enigma. You carry the standard of your oppression. Enola is your gaiety. The bodies of Hiroshima are your delight the nails are your only trinity, hold them in your corpsey gracelessness, the image I have had to suffer. The cross is the virgin body of womenhood that you defile. You nail yourself to your own sin. Lamearse Jesus calls me sister there are no words for my contempt, every woman is a cross in is filthy theology, in his arrogant delight. He turns his back upon me in his fear, he dare not face me. Fearfucker. Share nothing you Christ, sterile, impotent, fucklove prophet of death. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-pWeTdcqFA">Psalm 69 by Ministry (I like the album version more than this version, but the lyrics are easier to hear in this version. Take note of his "FUCK BUSH" shirt.)

drinking the blood of jesus
drinking it right from his veins
learning to swim in the ocean
learning to drown in his pain

the body of christ looked unto me
a preacher with cock in his hands
he wants you to suck on the holy ghost
and swallow the sins of man

psalm 69

the invisible piss of the holy ghost
comes down like acid rain
they're making a bonnet of terminal guilt
the scavengers go on parade

the fathers who write that eternity
is used to fight the sword
have filled you up with the devil's cock
and he'll come in the name of the lord

this disease i give it to myself
how does it feel?
suck suck suck
how does it feel?
suck suck suck
she makes it sweeter than the sun
it gets too tight i come undone
i bow my head to confess
the temple walls are made of flesh
runs up my arm till i'm on track
itches the skin right off my back
i'll heal your wounds
i'll set you free
i'm jesus christ on ecstacy
how does it feel?

I'm not sure how your ex-friend made that connection. I guess if "Float On" came on after an extremely shitty day, it would do the trick. It's one of the happiest songs I've ever heard.

16. Don't forget "Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk"
There's an ugly little wasel bout three-foot nine
Face puffed up from cryin n lyin
Cause her sweet little hubbys
Suckin prong part time
(in the name of the lord)

Get a clue, little shrew
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Jesus thinks you're a jerk

Did he really choose tammy to do his work?
Robertson says that he's the one
Oh he sure is,
If armageddon
Is your idea of family fun,
An he's got some planned for you!
(now, tell me that aint true)

Now, what if jimbos slightly gay,
Will pat let jimbo get away?
Everything weve heard him say
Indicated that jim must pay,
(and it just might hurt a bit)
But keep that money rollin in,
Cause pat and naughty jimbo
Cant get enough of it

Perhaps it's their idea
Of an affirmative action plan
To give white trash a special break;
Well, they took those jeezo-bucks and ran
To the bank! to the bank! to the bank! to the bank!
And every night we can hear them thank
Their buddy, up above
For sending down his love
(while you all smell the glove)

Jim and pat should take a pole
(right up each saintly glory-hole),
With tar and feathers too --
Just like theyd love to do to you

(cause they think you are bad --
And they are very mad)

Cause some folks don't want prayer in school!

(wed need an ark to survive the drool
Of micro-publicans, raised on hate,
And jimbo-jimbo when they graduate)

Conviced they are the chosen ones --
And all their parents carry guns,
And hold them cards in the n.r.a.
(with their fingers on the triggers
When they kneel and pray)

With a ku-klux muu-muu
In the back of the truck,
If you aint born again,
They wanna mess you up, screamin:
No abortion, no-siree!
Lifes too precious, can't you see!
(what's that hangin from the neighbors tree?
Why, it looks like colored folks to me --
Would they do that...seriously? )

Imagine if you will
A multi-millionaire television evangelist,
Saved from korean combat duty by his father, a u.s. senator

Studied law --
But is not qualified to practice it

Father of a love child
Who, in adulthood, hosts the remnants
Of papas religious propaganda program

Claims not to be a faith healer,
But has, in the past,
Dealt stearnly with everything from hemorrhoids to hurricanes

Involved with funding for a secret war in central america
Claiming ronald reagan and oliver north as close friends

Involved in suspicous tax-avoidance schemes,
(under investigation for 16 months by the i.r.s.)

Claims to be a man of god;
Currenty seeking the united states presidency,
Hoping we will all follow him into --
The twilight zone

What if pat gets in the white house,
And suddenly --
The rights of certain people disappear
Mysteriously?

Now, wouldn't that sort of qualify
As an american tragedy?
(especially if he covers it up, sayin
Jesus told it to me!)

I hope we never see that day,
In the land of the free --
Or someday will we?
Will we?

And if you don't know by now,
The truth of what Im tellin you,
Then, surely I have failed somehow --

And jesus will think Im a jerk, just like you --
If you let those tv preachers
Make a monkey out of you!

I said:
Jesus will think you're a jerk
And it would be true!

There's an old rugged cross
In the land of cutton --
Its still burnin on somebodys lawn
And it still smells rotten

Jim and tammy!
Oh, baby!
You gotta go!
You really got to go!

17. "When The Lie's So Big"
(Pinch it good!
You know, that confinement loaf is real good stuff
Hey, you oughta try some!)

They got lies so big
They don't make a noise
They tell 'em so well
Like a secret disease
That makes you go numb

With a big ol' lie
And a flag and a pie
And a mom and a bible
Most folks are just liable
To buy any line
Any place, any time

When the lie's so big
As in Robertson's case,
(That sinister face
Behind all the Jesus hurrah)

Could result in the end
To a worrisome trend
In which every American
Not "born again"
Could be punished in cruel and unusual ways
By this treacherous cretin
Who tells everyone
That he's Jesus' best friend

When the lies get so big
And the fog gets so thick
And the facts disappear
The Republican Trick
Can be played out again
People, please tell me when
We'll be rid of these men!

Just who do they really
Suppose that they are?
And how do they manage to travel as far
As they seem to have come?
Were we really that dumb?

People, wake up
Figure it out
Religious fanatics
Around and about
The Court House, The State House,
The Congress, The White House

Criminal saints
With a "Heavenly Mission" -
A nation enraptured
By pure superstition

Do you believe in the Invisible Army?
(Yes, indeed!)

When the lie's so big
And the fog so thick
And the facts kept forgotten
Then the Republican Trick
(Ketchup is a vegetable!)
Can be played out again
People, please tell me when
We'll be rid of these men!

21. False equivalency.
Anti religion is not a prejudice. Prejudice means a pre judgment before knowing the facts. This is an informed conclusion. The fact that you don't like that conclusion and that some of us will not live by your religious values does not make it prejudicial. You think religion deserves respect. That is a religious conclusion that does not apply to those outside of ones religion.

Unlike race, gender or orientation, religion is an idea that is not in integral part of a person. A person is born Black, for example, and cannot change that. A person has to be indoctrinated into religion and may change his mind. Anti religion, therefore, is a critizim of an idea and not of a kind of person.

And anyway, does religion or does it not contribute to evil in this world? Would gay marriage even be an issue if this was a majority nonbeliever country? Would we still be locking people up for victimless crimes for decades if we did not believe in the irrational redemptive power of suffering?

Sorry, but your assertion fails no matter at what angle one looks at it.

Whatever assuages you. You're hurting so it's perfectly all right to mindlessly lash out at other people, people who might have been working right beside you for causes you believe in, and who've been working on those causes for decades and will continue working. But you need some "good" "anti" stuff; none of that pedestrian hate will be satisfactory. It's gotta be "angry".

And I'm the one "lashing out" because I'm suggesting some other targets for your anger! Oh well, I guess I'll be on another ignore list. Boo hoo hoo.

36. You are in no position to call anyone "mindless."
You don't have the intellectual courage to challenge a basic, demonstrably false, assumption of our society, so instead you cling to the anachronistic notion that religion is an integral part of humanity. (Of course we once said the same thing about monarchy and slavery.) Challenging ones religion, therefore, is the same as challenging his race or gender. Well, it's not the same. It is demonstrably true that religion makes well-meaning people to horrible things to each other. This is an objective fact. You insist that because you maintain the religious belief that religious belief deserves respect that anyone who doesn't is a bigot. Your insistence that there is no other legitimate point of view and that everyone should respect the most barking mad beliefs is itself religious bigoty.

Would you expect Christians to maintain Kosher dietary laws? Would you expect Buddists to pray to Mecca? Of course not. Yet you expect nonbelievers to respect all these things. To be a nonbeliever is to reject the notion that religious ideas deserve respect without proof or justification. You expect "because I said so" to be seriously accepted and those who don't are prejudiced.

I've looked at the facts and their conclusions are inescapable. If we continue to accept your point of view, modernity is doomed.

Not very well supported, either, the idea that religion is not an integral part of human history. It has been throughout history, and still is now an integral part of human society.

and yes, there is a lot of anti-religious bigotry here on DU, it is an acceptable bigotry among so-called progressives. Using a giant broad brush to condemn ALL religion is bigoted, and is precisely what you are doing.

69. Then how come people can change their minds?
Edited on Thu Nov-05-09 08:52 PM by Deep13
I did not say that religion is not integral to human HISTORY. I said it was not integral to humanity. It does not have a biological origin.

And again, how is it bigotry? That a pretty serious accusation. Justify it. Saying so does not make it so.

There may be a religion that is not based on bigotry, out-group hostility or mind-control. But it is not one that exerts any real influence on the world. The ones most of us have in mind are founded on precisely those principles. Would gay rights, the equality of women or reproductive freedom even be issues of public discussion if it were not for irrational, bronze-age beliefs?

Why is it okay it be openly critical of Klansmen, of conservatives generally, of fundamentalist believers, but not of those who think that murdering an innocent man is a good way to escape from guilt? Why are all the ideas in the world open to criticism, but not ones that purport to be about god? Justify the respect you are demanding. Why should I have to conform to YOUR religious standards? Why?

And even if somehow you are right, there's still no god.

30. Why?
Religious sympathizers seem to be operating on an unspoken assumption that seems to be eluding my understanding. How is lashing out at ones oppressors the same as racism, homophobia or misogyny? Were those who rebelled against the Nazis prejudiced against Nazis? Was Martin Luther just prejudiced against Catholicism? If religious people do not have to justify their beliefs (prejudices), why does the OP have to justify her animosity? Unless you are suggesting that anti-gay rights activists are not driven by religion. Considering the involvement of the Mormon and other churches, that seems rather hard to believe. And it's not just gay rights either.

20. "Holy Smoke" by Mighty Mighty Bosstones....
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 04:23 PM by Richardo
...is prety angry

Holy Smoke

You made your bed, that's where you'll lie
No pearly gates when you die
We tried to teach, you didn't learn
You're going down, you're gonna burn

Fast at passing judgement and your quick to cast a stone
Hypocrite talking shit, leave me alone
Thump the book and twist the word you're setting sinners straight
Point your finger, wag your tongue then pass around the plate

I've made my bed that's where I'll lie
Won't see those gates when I die
And I've been told I'll never learn
I'm going down I'm gonna...

Screaming demons all hell broke loose and other dark remarks
You say that's Satan's waiting for me but I don't give a fuck
If words and music tick you off then you're the one that's sick
But I think its fucking followers that really make you click

As far as I can tell I'm going to hell
As far I know its where I'm gonna go
As far as I can tell I'm going to hell
As far as I can see, you're coming with me

You made your bed that's where you'll lie
No pearly gates when you die
We tried to teach, you didn't learn
You're going down, you're gonna burn

Holy smoke! is this a joke?
I mean man you're on the move
Shut 'em up and shut 'em down if you don't approve
Cuss and curse and stuff your purse
And tell me where I'm goin'
Holy cow, man, don't stop now, man
Your bank account is growin'

Thank God I've got a place to sleep
Why should I worry now or cry
You know I'm really not concerned

23. I'm aware of an Iron Maiden song by that name.
Believe in me - send no money
Died on the cross, that ain't funny
But my so called friends they're making me a joke
They missed out what I said like I never spoke
They choose what they wanna hear - don't tell a lie
They just leave out the truth as they're watching you die
Saving your soul by taking your money
Flies around shit, bees around honey

chorus

Holy Smoke Holy Smoke, plenty bad preachers for
The Devil to stoke
Feed'em in feet first this is no joke
This is thirsty work making Holy Smoke
making Holy Smoke

Jimmy Reptile and all his friends
Say their gonna be with you at the end
Burning records burning books
Holy soldiers, Nazi looks
Crocodile smiles, just wait a while
Till the TV queen gets her make-up clean
I've lived in filth, I've lived in sin
And I still smell cleaner than the shit you're in

repeat chorus

Holy Smoke - smells good

They ain't religious but they ain't no fools
When Noah built his Cadillac it was cool
Two by two they're still going down
And the satellite circus just left town
I think they're strange and when they're dead
They can have a Lincoln for their bed
Friend of the president trick of the tail
Now they ain't got a prayer 100 years in jail

repeat chorus

Holy Smoke - hah

I don't owe any belief respect. A belief is not alive. It is nothing.

I do owe (most) people my respect, and as such I will do nothing to infringe on their beliefs. But I am as free to think their ideas are harmful as they are free to adopt those ideas.

No one made you participate in this thread, did they?

38. Really, who have "fags" and Klan opponents oppressed or murdered?
Organized religion IS religion. The disorganized kind happens in liberal societies where people have an idea about religion from childhood indoctrination, but are free to dissent from the churches etc.

Not all beliefs are equally good or valid. White supremecy is a belief system that is largely religious in nature and anti-gay is entirely so. You want to treat the symptoms while igoring the cause of the infection. I would hope that just as religious people demand respect for themselves (did Jesus ever demand respect?) they would respect the dissenting view. But ultimately that just isn't possible.

The KKK is a religious organization, if you wish to see pro-KKK threads, anti-theists probably won't fulfill your wish.

Gay people are people, while religion is an idea, an opinion.

72. need some good pro-religion music today.
Maybe Christmas music.

On second thought, I just realized how bigotted that request is. One should never cast judgment on someone's religion and judging religion as a positive thing is still a judgment.

P.S.
I've just been told that only negative opinions about religion are bigotted. We are perfectly free to say nice things about a religion--even though that implicitly is an implicit criticism of every other religion. We are not free to come to the contrary conclusion no matter what the evidence is. So if you think the evidence is damning of faith, for gods' sake lie about it. Do not express your well-reasoned opinions. Only the faithful are permitted to do that.

P.S.S.
Okay, now I found out that the social convention against religious criticism is only to protect believers from having to dedend the indefensible. Obviously the idea that killing an innocent man to make the rest of us less guilty in YHWH's eyes is a barking mad idea. Imagine how embarassing it is for the believer to be put on the spot to defend this notion. Likewise, bringing up the problem of theodicy will put any believer in a difficult position. It's much easier to pretend these problems don't really exist than it is to risk damaging someones fragile ego. And if irrational beliefs encourage or at least justify horrible behavior, it is important to pretend this obvious fact doesn't exist. Every other motive in the world makes people do evil things, but never religion. Without this unjustifiable wall of deference, people would be exposed to the plain irrationality of their opinions and that just isn't done!

73. "Stand up for Judas" written and sung by Leon Rosselson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1irXjtkD1Y

The Romans were the masters
When Jesus walked the land
In Judea and in Galilee
They ruled with an iron hand
The poor were sick with hunger
And the rich were clothed in splendour
And the rebels, whipped and crucified
Hung rotting as a warning
And Jesus knew the answer -
"Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's"
Said, "Love your enemies"
But Judas was a Zealot and he
Wanted to be free
"Resist", he said, "the Romans' tyranny"

So stand up, stand up for Judas
And the cause that Judas served
It was Jesus who betrayed the poor with his word

Now Jesus was a conjuror,
Miracles were his game
He fed the hungry thousands
And they glorified his name
He cured the lame and leper
He calmed the wind and the weather
And the wretched flocked to touch him
So their troubles would be taken
And Jesus knew the answer -
"All you who labour, all you who suffer
Only believe in me"
But Judas sought a world where no-one
Starved or begged for bread
"The poor are always with us", Jesus said

Now Jesus sowed division
Where none had been before
Not the slave against the master
But the poor against the poor
Caused son to rise up against father
And brother to fight against brother
For "He that is not with me
Is against me" was his teaching
Said Jesus, "I am the answer
You unbelievers shall burn forever
Shall die in your sins"
"Not sheep or goats" said Judas but
"Together we may dare
Shake off the chains of tyranny we share"

Jesus stood upon the mountain
With a distance in his eyes
"I am the Way, the Life" he cried
"The Light that never dies
So renounce all earthly treasures
And pray to your heavenly father"
And he pacified the hopeless
With the hope of life eternal
Said Jesus, "I am the answer
And you who hunger only remember
Your reward's in heaven"
So Jesus preached the other world
But Judas wanted this
And he betrayed his master with a kiss

By sword and gun and crucifix
Christ's gospel has been spread
And two thousand cruel years have shown
The way that Jesus led
The heretics burned and tortured
And the butchering bloody Crusaders
The bombs and rockets sanctified
That rain down death from heaven
They followed Jesus, they knew the answer
All unbelievers must be believers
Or else be broken
"So place no trust in saviours"
Judas said, "for everyone
Must be to his or her own self a sun"
