Is the feeling you get when you walk into a store, and there, right before your eyes, is a cd or book by an artist that you love that you had no idea was out.

Yesterday I found out by accident that Verbena, one of my favorite unknown bands, has a new(ish) cd out. I bought it in 3 seconds flat and I'm happy to say that it rocks!

1. Don't you keep up with your "favorites"?
They (artists/authors) are quite easy to track.

2. Yeah, I do
But there are always a few artists/writers/whathaveyou that have sporadic output. It's somewhat difficult keeping up with someone who hasn't done new work in several years, and who have basically gone off the radar. Usually it's the smaller artists, mainly because they don't get the publicity of name artists when they release new material.

3. Here's a feeling that I think may be up there with yours
When you first discover an artist or an art form and find out you like it.

I discovered Stephen King and Metallica when I was in high school back in the eighties. They both had quite a bit of material out by then and they were a God send. I don't think I could have made it through high school without them.

I recently discovered jazz. Or I should say I recently discovered that I like jazz. New rock wasn't inspiring me any more and I'm so glad to have this new art form to dig. And talk about lots of material! I've got about 90 years worth to choose from.

5. Yep. That's a similar feeling
I guess I'm just a neophile. I love the "new".

(for those who've never heard the term before:)

neophilia

/nee`oh-fil'-ee-*/ n. The trait of being excited and pleased by novelty. Common among most hackers, SF fans, and members of several other connected leading-edge subcultures, including the pro-technology `Whole Earth' wing of the ecology movement, space activists, many members of Mensa, and the Discordian/neo-pagan underground. All these groups overlap heavily and (where evidence is available) seem to share characteristic hacker tropisms for science fiction, music, and oriental food. The opposite tendency is 'neophobia'.

4. When I walked into Sam's club the other day to buy my monthly army
sized box of Tide (w/bleach, I have a 5 year old), and found it had dropped $2.00. That was a terrific feeling.
