Just how subversive was it for Charlie Brown to only get rocks, not candy, for Halloween?

 
Seriously, it's very theater of the absurd, especially for the 1960s, to have every adult in this Minneapolis neighborhood just spontaneously decide We think you're a little shit, Charlie Brown -- so everyone else gets candy but your sorry ass only gets a chunk of igneous.

Well, frankly, Charlie Brown was a whiny little shit. You notice no one was pulling that stunt with Lucy Van Pelt; she'd egg their windows and then slash their tires.

It fits with the whole "depressive" characteristic. I think all the kids' commentaries/dialogue were pretty subversive- the later Peanuts aren't nearly as funny and sharp - almost dumbed down.

Wasnt there an off Broadway play a few years back that was based on the Peanuts characters but they were all in rehab?
