Poll question: BEST movie Cop-slash-Detective-slash-Private Investigator OF ALL TIME
Another one of those "HOW COULD YOU LEAVE OUT (BLANK)" polls.

Hey, nine choices, one "other," I did my best. Now do yours and vote.

1. Marcvs Didivs Falco, P.I. (Private Informer).

Or Gordianus the Finder.

Although I never could figure out why he's dressed like a medieval monk instead of a republican Roman in this image...

And his partner, "LEW-is!"

Also, Arkady Renko in "Gorky Park" and other novels.

ETA: Oh shit, you said "movie." Sorry.

4. Yep...I had a zillion other choices outside of "movie"...
...and it's one of the few times I've done a poll with so many multiples within each choice. But remember that vote for the inevitable TV version of the poll.

11. I so love those - I really miss Morse (character and actor John Thaw)

I'm also a big fan of Jim Chee and his boss in the Tony Hillerman books (a few made into movies, but not particularly well)

24. My first thought, too, but he wasn't a *movie* detective.
And Garner's turn as Philip Marlowe was kinda blah.

26. There were a few Rockford movies.
I agree, he was dull as Marlowe. I voted for Bogart as Marlowe anyway.

Marlowe has brought down several mighty actors. Mitchum, Garner, Gould... for some reason, he's hard to capture.

And it was Morgan Freeman that made that movie. Pitt was cardboard.

23. Hercule Poirot (as played by Peter Ustinov)
He did actual detective work, rather than beating up random junkies until one of them ratted out the villain.

31. I see a lot of choices I'd normally have chosen, but since I haven't seen them mentioned:
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby (Midsomer Murders)...

and by FAR the best detective series I've seen ANYWHERE (and I've seen a few): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvo_Montalbano
