Why didn't the people in Night of the Living Dead just take out the stairs in the house?

All they would have had to of done is taken all the supplies they could find upstairs and pull the stairs up behind them. Problem solved. Zombies can't climb or build structures. They could have just waited it out.

I guess that just goes to show that I'm smarter than everyone ever in a movie.
