What song is your personal anthem?
"How Soon is Now" (The Smiths, 1985)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U5HpeA_WSo

Lyrics breakdown:

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Oh, of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen "now"
Well, when exactly do you mean ?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

Lyrics to The Weak Willed:

I will not give in to fascist beliefs and I am not a fool
I will not let pride in my core be rooted out
I will stand firm on my beliefs
Live life the master of my destiny
See no other way to live

I am not the weak willed
Nor am I a fool who can not see
I am not the weak willed
I will not let pride destroy me

Wise men can see the difference in compromise
And laying down ones beliefs

There shall be wisdom in my beliefs
They shall be rooted in strength not failure

With lies on your tong seek to deceive
You've fallen victim to the human condition
And it's lead to your defeat

I am not the weak willed
Nor am I a fool who can not see
I am not the weak willed
I will not let pride destroy me

I will not let pride destroy me

6. Common People - Pulp

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College, that's where I caught her eye.
She told me that her Dad was loaded
I said in that case I'll have a rum and coke-cola.
She said fine and in thirty seconds time she said, I want to live like common people
I want to do whatever common people do, I want to sleep with common people
I want to sleep with common people like you.
Well what else could I do - I said I'll see what I can do.
I took her to a supermarket
I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere, so it started there.
I said pretend you've got no money, she just laughed and said oh you're so funny.
I said yeah? Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here.
Are you sure you want to live like common people
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to sleep with common people,
you want to sleep with common people like me.
But she didn't understand, she just smiled and held my hand.
Rent a flat above a shop, cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool, pretend you never went to school.
But still you'll never get it right
'cos when you're laid in bed at night watching roaches climb the wall
If you call your Dad he could stop it all.
You'll never live like common people
You'll never do what common people do
You'll never fail like common people
You'll never watch your life slide out of view, and dance and drink and screw
Because there's nothing else to do.
Sing along with the common people, sing along and it might just get you thru'
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh along even though they're laughing at you and the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that poor is cool.
I want to live with common people, I want to live with common people

7. That's one of my favorite songs and was my anthem for a while
Have you heard William Shatner's cover of it? It's probably the only good song Shatner made in his ill advised career in music, although he did have some help with it.

11. Not sure if this is an "anthem", but it is the song I most identify with...
"Vuela" - Jarabe de Palo

Mucho tiempo llevo sin oir las olas romper en las rocas,
y eso que que estoy rodeado y aquí todos gritan, pero nadie
escucha.
Mucho tiempo llevo sin hablar un minuto con ellas,
y eso que estoy rodeado por mil y un sonidos que acechan
mi pensamiento.

Por eso ahora querría ser un pájaro;
salir volando, subir muy alto;
con la mirada siempre fija "p´alante";
sin importarme lo que haya debajo.

Para un momento, siéntate un rato y sin prisas
hablemos.
Tómate un trago, quizás haya algo que sepas y
no sepa yo

solitario.

13. Blaze of Glory
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wvki1blQOzc

It's funny how they shoot you down
When your hands are held up high
And you open up your heart and soul
But that's not enough for most.

I remember this much
There is nothing
You shouldn't speak of
If you got something to say
And there is no one
To be scared of
Just get them out of the way

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
My heart is open wide
You can take anything
that you want from me
there is nothing left to hide

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
my hands are held up high
I'm learning how to hit back
I'm learning how to fight

The law of the jungle says
You look after yourself
But I remember this much
I love as I've been loved myself.

Don't forget what I told you now
When the question keeps on coming
And it's "How much more
can you take"
When they've ripped your
clothes to pieces
"Shouldn't you be gone by now"

But you keep on
GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
< Find more Lyrics on www.mp3lyrics.org/NFZe >
Setting your sights for the sky.
They can offer you anything at all
But your dreams must not be sold.
GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
No price is high enough
I'm fighting back with feeling
I'm fighting back with love

When the nails are biting into your hands
And the cross is heavy on your heart
Now is the time to really make a stand
MY HANDS ARE HELD UP HIGH.

(Going out)
IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
(Going out)
IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
(Going out)
IN A BLAZE OF GLORY

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
My heart is open wide
You can take anything
that you want from me
But you cannot take my soul

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
My hands are held up high
I'm learning how to hit back
Yes I'm learning how to fight

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
Going out with my heart wide open
Going out with my hands held high

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
(repeat)

Fighting back with love
Fighting back with LOVE!
No price is high enough
To take my soul, to take my soul
To take my soul

It's funny how they shoot you down
when your hands are held up high

15. gut pageant
That fine fever brought us here
Lambasted eyeballs
When we kiss the dirt
The orchids laugh

What a gut pageant
We could play for hours
What a gut pageant
Meat for the flowers

You break out of a paper bag
And wake up on the street
Just kidding
You don't have to go

I asked him why the grass is blue
And stray boys don't go home
Why four a.m's so screwy
He says ' sleep through it '

What a gut pageant
We could play for hours
What a gut pageant
Meat for the flowers

Not too special not too strange
Just the way I like 'em
You find an empty promise and stick by it

Not too pretty, not too sweet
Just the way I like you
When you kiss the dirt
The orchids laugh, harder than me

Tell me another one
I could sit for hours
When anyone laughs
I know I'm a coward

What a gut pageant
We could play for hours
When we kiss the dirt
The orchids laugh, harder than me.

16. Que me up some peppers..
Can't Stop
The first 58 seconds of video is a waste of time, then the song starts..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrbAnV0s3Mo

Can't stop addicted to the shin dig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
Eastside love is living on the westend
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burnin' so bright I wonder what the wave meant
White heat is screaming in the jungle
Complete the motion if you stumble
Go ask the dust for any answers
Come back strong with 50 belly dancers

The world I love
The tears I drop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you
The world I love
The trains I hop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Come and tell me when it's time to

Sweetheart is bleeding in the snowcone
So smart she's leading me to ozone
Music the great communicator
Use two sticks to make it in the nature
I'll get you into penetration
The gender of a generation
The birth of every other nation
Worth your weight the gold of meditation
This chapter's going to be a close one
Smoke rings I know your going to blow one
All on a spaceship persevering
Use my hands for everything but steering
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
Mop tops are happy when they feed you
J. Butterfly is in the treetop
Birds that blow the meaning into bebop

Wait a minute I'm passing out
Win or lose just like you
Far more shocking
Than anything i ever knew
How about you
10 more reasons
Why i need somebody new just like you
Far more shocking than anything I ever knew
Right on cue

Can't stop addicted to the shin dig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
Eastside love is living on the westend
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burnin' so bright I wonder what the wave meant

Kick start the golden generator
Sweet talk but don't intimidate her
Can't stop the gods from engineering
Feel no need for any interfering
Your image in the dictionary
This life is more than ordinary
Can I get 2 maybe even 3 of these
Come from space
To teach you of the pliedes
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
This life is more than just a read thru

21. Jump Over the Moon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML99I1c-iwA

MAUREEN:
Last night, I had a dream:
I found myself in a desert called Cyberland.
It was hot.
My canteen had sprung a leak and I was thirsty.

Out of the abyss walked a cow, Elsie.
I asked if she had anything to drink, she said,
"I'm forbidden to produce milk,
In Cyberland we only drink Diet Coke" (coke coke coke)

She said,
"Only thing to do is jump over the moon.
They've closed everything real down,
Like barns and troughs and Performing Spaces,
And replaced it all with lies, and rules, and Virtual Life
But there is a way out.

Leap of faith, leap of faith, leap of faith, leap of faith

Oo-oo-oo
Only thing to do is jump over the moon

I gotta get outta here!
It's like I'm being tied to the hood of
a yellow rental truck, bein' packed in with fertilizer and fuel oil, pushed over a cliff by a suicidal Mickey Mouse!
I gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
gotta, gotta find a way
To jump over the moon.
Only thing to do is jump over the moon."

Then a little bulldog entered.
His name, we have learned, was Benny.
And although he once had principles, he abandoned them to live as a lapdog to a wealthy daughter of the revolution.

a-1, 2, 3,
"That's bull," he said,
"Ever since the cat took off with the fiddle that cow's been jumpy.
The dish and the spoon were evicted from the table and eloped,
She's had trouble with the milk and the moon ever since - maybe it's a female thing.

'Cause who'd wanna leave cyberland anyway - Walls ain't so bad.
The dish and the spoon, for instance, they're down on their luck, they come knockin' on my doghouse door,
and I said "Not in my backyard utensils, go back to china!" (bideebong)

"The only way out is up," Elsie whispered to me,
"A leap of faith
Still Thirsty?
Parched (parched parched parched)
Have some milk"
And I lowered myself beneath her, and held my mouth to her swollen udder, and sucked the sweetest milk I've ever tasted

"Climb on board!" She said.
And as the harvest moon rose over Cyberland, we reared back,
we sprang into a gallop, leaping, out of orbit; I awoke singing

Leap of faith, leap of faith, leap of faith, leap of faith

Oo-oo-oo
Only thing to do
Only think to do is jump
Only thing to do is jump Over the moon
Only thing to do is jump Over the moon
Over the moon
Over the

MOOOOOOOO!!

Moo with me! Come on sir, moo with me! Moo! Mooo! MOOO! MOOOOOO!

Thank you!

That has been "my" song (in my own head) since I first heard it in, what, '83 or whenever?

That became our college anthem, too.

27. Fresh from 1971
Can't call it a true anthem of mine; but, I have enjoyed it since being surprised by how mild & mellow it was in the midst of a Black Sabbath album way back then. My grandkids are still trying to come to terms with an old rusty metalhead grandpa in his 60's. They are trying to come up with a name to call old guys like me.

SWEET LEAF

Alright now!
Won't you listen?

When I first met you, didn't realize,
I can't forget you or your surprise
You introduced me to my mind
And left me watching you and you kind.
Oh yeah

I love you. Oh, you know it.

My life was empty, forever on a down,
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf though you can't hear
Oh yeah!

Come on now - Try it out!

Straight people don't know what you're about,
They put you down and shut you out
You gave to me a new belief,
And soon the world will love you sweet leaf
Oh yeah baby!

Come on now! Oh yeah!
Try me out baby!
Alright! Oh yeah-ah!
I want you part of this sweet leaf!
Oh yeah!
Alright, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh try me out
I love you sweet leaf, oh

http://www.youtube.com/v/jUBuznLcJC4&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e9e00

Drive your mustang down
To where you hang out
Alone without a friend
Girls walk by you
Some in fact have tried you
Once they tried they never tried again
Except the new girl
Except the new girl

Alone and lonesome
Trusting no one
They say you never had a friend
People talk about you
They say they doubt you really
Ever let anybody in
Except the new girl
Except the new girl

I guess there's never been anyone else
Except the new girl
Except the new girl

Last time I saw him
He was laughing
She was standing by his side
I've got a feeling
That they're still together
>From the look that was in his eyes
There's no one
Except the new girl
Except the new girl

See him smile
He don't care
Said he loves her
And he'll always love her
See him smile
It seems fair
That he finally found her
Finally hold her
There's no one
Except the new girl
Except the new girl
Except the new girl
