Okay, so I saw "The Mist" on TV last night....(vague spoilers)
Edited on Wed Oct-28-09 11:31 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
....and once again where I have full advance knowledge of the movie's ending I still end up totally depressed from it. ("Marley and Me" being the other case in point.)

I actually didn't hear about the movie until a week or two ago. For whatever reason, I was confusing it with "The Fog", a rather shitty and lame movie starring the guy from "Smallville." Then my father in law was talking about watching it, and at that time having no interest or knowledge about it, I allowed him to spoil the ending, which is quite shocking, but didn't sound as shocking as it played out when you actually saw the movie.

But nonetheless I started watching it on television last night and found it to be rather engaging. Knowing the ending to it, I had that sense of inevitable dread to it all, which I think may have helped me appreciate it more.

The acting was decent, the effects were decent, but I think the scene that brought it home was right before the very depressing ending, when the character see the "incredibly tall creature" just meandering across the landscape. I don't know, for whatever reason, that just stuck with me.

And then you have the ending, which is, how you say....a downer....But I will give the filmmakers credit for creating a movie that continues to stick with me after the final credits roll (the Coen brothers are great at that.) That's a sign of good filmmaking.

From what I've read, the ending of the original Stephen King story wasn't quite as depressing. Not sure if I would have wanted that ending or the movie ending.

1. The novella's ending was a cliffhanger
which I liked, but the ending to the film just, well, it's either a gut puncher or it provides gratuitous shock value, depending on the way you choose to look at it. I really enjoyed it. Great social commentary as well.

2. I've never watched the movie
Read the short story some years ago. I remember thinking about the story a lot after reading it. I don't know how the ending to the movie went down, but the ending in the book wasn't very uplifting, either.

4. I believe even Stephen King expressed his approval of the movie's ending
If you haven't seen it, do so.

3. The ending to the short story was inconclusive
I'm sorry that you knew the ending of the movie ahead of time. I was unaware when I first saw it, and it absolutely blew me away.

5. Me too.
It was the only time I actually loudly uttered an obscenity (preceded by "Holy") in a quiet movie theater.

6. So did I!
A guy a couple rows down from me actually cried out, "I can't f***in' believe it!!"

It's that kind of magical moment that going to the movies is all about.

7. really? I will have to give it another try, then. I could not get past
the first...."there is something in the mist"

and that guy runs out to his vehicle, right...?

8. Being very familiar with the short story...
the movie ending was really sad!! The book left you coming up with your own ending (so they all lived happily ever after in my head...ha ha). The movie took it a few steps further (and away from my happy ending), but also was a cliff hanger....what did the guy do next? In my mind he killed himself. Not a happily ever after like the book ending I could give myself, but I guess I would do that in that situation.

(And naturally after seeing the movie I had to drive at night in the fog...)

11. In a way, kid actors are more able to convey a sense of terror than adults
I don't know why.

12. The ending to the movie I think struck me more now than it would several years ago.
Since I'm now a parent.

Without going into specifics, I don't think there would be any way humanly possible that I would ever have done the same thing that the main character did at the end.

14. Seriously.
I think the father was thinking "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't", but at that point, I'd have fought it out until the bitter end. Which ended up not being far away at all. Sad.

10. omg! The character Marcia Gay Harden plays!
I wanted to hurt her myself. That character alone will keep me from ever watching the movie again. I don't like having such strong feelings of revenge against someone who is just a movie character but damn! that was one hateful woman.

13. Agreed, I saw the movie before reading the short story
and my first gut reaction to Hardens character was

"I'd knock her out and throw her in a meat locker, mark my words that woman is going to cause trouble"

:D

I also enjoyed Ollie's character greatly .
