I tried to help a baby squirrel on campus today.
Edited on Mon Oct-26-09 09:50 PM by MrsBrady
I found a young squirrel on campus today that was alive, but not moving away from me...
I was making a short cut through some grass when I found the little guy. I thought it odd when he didn't move away from me.
I was going to choir (and running late), but snapped a picture of the cute squirrel...thought maybe he was playing possum.
I thought I would check on him after class, and if he was still there, then I would know something was wrong with the little guy.
Well, an hour later he was still there. I could tell something was wrong, then. No way would a young just stay there. I could tell he was breathing, but he wasn't moving much.
I didn't want to touch him though, cuz just in case he had rabies.
After a phone call to the campus operator, I found out they have someone on campus to handle live animals...which I had no idea there was someone with that kind of job.
I described to him where the squirrel was, and he told me he would go over there right away to check on him...and there was a "lady" that sometimes takes animals home to nurse them if necessary.
I asked him to call me back to let me know what happened.
Well, I was in my next class and he left me a message...he said they got the squirrel, but were not able to save him as he had broken his back. They had to euthanize him.
He must have fallen out of the tree he was under. I called the worker and left a message thanking him for his help.

It made me a little sad, somehow to know the little guy didn't make it. My husband and I have rescued 3 cats in the last year...kept one and re-homed the second two.
I can't stand to see an animal suffer. I can't even watch animal planet.
He was such a cute squirrel. Hope he knows I tried to help.

I am glad I made a call, though...because he didn't starve to death or die of exposure on a night like tonight. It's cold and raining.
At least he's in the big oak forest in the sky. Poor little guy.

So when I got home, I hugged all three of my cats, and the big border collie...all of them rescues.

5. You did good.
When I was out visiting my daughter a couple of months ago, I noticed a smaller squirrel at the bottom of an old oak tree, trying to climb up, but it was obvious his back was broken. His lower half was totally paralyzed. We went out to help him, but an adult squirrel (his mom?) carried him wayyyyy up to the top ot the tree, into the squirrel's nest. She hasn't seen any trace of him since. I hope they're taking care of the little guy.

6. This one was young. But looked
old enough to be on his own.

I know I did the right thing, just wished he could have made it.

as hell they don't live but he is now out of his pain. So you did well by him.

11. I found a baby squirrel in the middle of an intersection one time. I took him to some
woods that were far away from cats and other predators and left him there with some nuts. That is all I could do for him.

14. I am so sad for this little squirrel. But thank you for helping it. It would have been far worse
had some other critter come along and found it.

15. Good on you! I sat in a parking lot for over an hour wiht a seagull entangled in fishing line...
so that no one would run over it while the Humane Society came to get it.

It's the least I could do.

16. I shot one with my BB gun when I was a kid
and knocked him out of a tree. I thought the squirrel was dead and tried to pick him up the little SOB gave me a nasty bite. The moral is don't pick up a squirrel especially if you shot him.

18. Aw, you're a sweetie.
You did the right thing. A friend of mine is a veterinarian. She
found a tiny baby squirrel. He was all nekkid and as big as
her index finger. She was keeping him warm and we devised a
nipple to feed him out of an infant feeding tube.

She had to go away for the weekend and left him in the care
of another friend. Said friend let him get cold and he died.
My vet friend wished she had left him with me because I've
nursed a bunch of critters back to health.

It's so sad about his broken back. There was really nothing
you could do except call someone. You did good.
