DU cat people: What's the best way to get the smell of cat pee out?
My two older tabbies are going to a better place tomorrow afternoon. It is time. They have been deteriorating. One has chronic renal failure and now, like his brother, has developed the kitty version of Alzheimers. They cry all night long. Their quality of life and my quality of life are in the toilet and it's time.

Now for the clean up. They've had bad potty habits for a while and I've put up with it. There are a number of products out there that are supposed to get the stink out: PetZyme, Urine Out, OxyWhatever. Any luck with them?

Believe me, I'm a wreck over this. I will miss them terribly. I caught one of them peeing in my purse yesterday and that was the last straw.

1. Out of what?
Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 02:39 PM by dropkickpa
Furniture, carpet over wood floors, what? Because, I gotta tell ya, if it's set into a wood floor, yer kind of screwed.

Sorry bout your kitties, it's always hard to say goodbye to beloved friends.

2. Upholstery...
I was able to take the covers off my sofa cushions and wash them. I will probably need to have new foam cut. This was the worst part of the sofa but they got the back cushions a bit also and that's what I need to treat.

Thankfully I have laminate floors and they're okay.

3. Enymatic cleaners are the way to go
The guy that cleans my rugs always leaves me some of his concentrated enzymatic cleaner, so I've never used any of the stuff at the pet stores, but it does work well.

5. Petco sells "Nature's Miracle"
It's the one they recommend. My current cat is the cleanest cat I've ever had, and she never has an accident.

This past New Years Eve, something upset her, and she had an accident.

So I got the Nature's Miracle. No smell, and 10 months later, no more accidents either.

6. My young male tabby was staying with my parents for a while
after I moved back to California. One day my mom called and asked if it would be okay to have "Ticket" neutered. He was a big boy now- he had "sprayed" into one of my dad's shoes!
I agree, enzymes are what gets rid of the smell in fabric, but you have to leave the solution on for several days to allow the enzymes to work.

I'm sorry about your cats, but I'm thankful that we are able to release our animal friends from the kinds of pain and other processes that make the end of life so difficult.

9. Nature's Miracle may do it, but if it doesn't try other enzymatic cleaners.
I use Stink Free when NM doesn't do the trick.

Sorry about your tabbies.

11. Thank you all for your suggestions
I just bought a bottle of Nature's Miracle "Urine Destroyer" and liberally (is there any other way?) on a chair and the sofa. We'll see how well it works. Here they are - Sam on top, Wrigs on the bottom. They are virtually identical except for markings on their paws.

12. I'm so sorry your babies lives are coming to an end.
I have one that is getting close so I do know what you are going through. At least you can have the satisfaction and peace of mind knowing that you gave them the best kitty lives they could possibly have and all the love that goes with that. The pain of this moment will pass but until then enjoy the memories and the warmth of all the love they gave you in return.

God, I am so sorry.

When you get ready to begin cleaning, get a big bottle of Nature's Miracle.

15. Thanks, Bertha.
It's going to be hard... but I've been through so much with them already. I'll miss their big lumps of fur and negotiating with Sam for pillow space at night. OTOH, sleep will be very nice.

16. I am sorry.
I can't imagine losing two at once. Big hugs from me and my two fur balls.

I can't recommend any particular brand of cleaning solution, but I have one suggestion to add: Dilution. This requires a Shop-Vac pr other device that can suck up water. Before you use the enzyme cleaner, soak the stains with plain water, and then vacuum it up. Keep rinsing the spots as many times as you can stand doing it. Then wash with the enzyme cleaner.
