Has anyone ever recovered from bad oral hygiene
Edited on Sun Oct-18-09 12:48 AM by Juche
I didn't take care of my teeth for a lil' over 2 decades (no brushing, flossing or anything), and by the end they were pretty shitty. I could actually wiggle a tooth by pushing it with my tongue, and my teeth actually felt kind of soft. So I figured this couldn't be good, and didn't want to pay thousands for fillings and root canals.

So I'm mainly curious if anyone else is in the same boat, and what they do or have done.

At this point my teeth are extremely hard (I changed and started taking care of things about 3-4 years ago), the dentist says my gums are extremely healthy and I am in fairly good shape. However I think I lost a bit of enamel over the years, and cavities will probably come up easier in the future because of it. But if I'm lucky the occasional cavity will be all I have to deal with.

My regimen consists of this.

Rinse with listerine for 30 seconds
floss and use a tung brush
rinse with flouride rinse for 1 minutes
Brush with a novamin toothpaste (re-mineralization toothpaste) for 2 minutes
Don't eat anything for 30 minutes afterwards

I honestly only brush 1x a day most days. When I do brush 2x a day it is usually just listerine and an ACP toothpaste like Arm & Hammer age defying (also a remineralization toothpaste).

I also take a variety of vitamin supplements that may help with dental health. I take them for unrelated reasons, but figure if they help, then that is ok. I take omega 3s as well as vitamin D, C and B vitamins.

So far it has worked. Like I said, my gums are extremely healthy now and my teeth feel harder. I'm glad I changed it before it got too bad.

I am thinking of finding some kind of gum with a base pH that I can chew in between meals to raise my oral pH to encourage remineralization. The only gum I know of that does that is gum designed for heartburn, and I think that stuff is expensive. Maybe I can chew some tums.
