Mad Men (spoilers may occur in this thread)
Pete was funny choking on all. and I had to wait for the second viewing (always watch the rebroadcast) to pick up on Sal's angle on the commercial, but I was kinda disappointed with the episode tonight. Two reasons...

First, it would've been nice if they had some subplot for Sal other than "he's gay and all the closeted gay clients can somehow just smell it on him and want to nail him." He's an interesting character, but there should be more to him than just "to boink or not to boink."

But it was significant how he shot the commercial vs how the Lucky Strikes creep wanted. He said people looking right at you "makes people feel uncomfortable." No Sal, it makes YOU uncomfortable.

The second disappointment was with the teacher-target. They really should've had her put up some resistance. Not every woman in the 60s was a pushover. Were they? I don't know. Don just going out and picking up a new mistress isn't exactly unexplored territory.

PS, just how many zillions of dollars is Hilton Hotels paying Mad Men for making Conrad Hilton a pivotal character as product placement?

1. I was too focused on wanting Jon Hamm to get naked.
Just started watching -- only my third episode -- and still getting into the show's rhythms.

Betty resisted what's-his-name (I guess because of the "tawdry" factor), so not all are depicted as pushovers. Although, last week, the tall redhead gave it up pretty easily.

2. Are you talking about Betty last week
when Betty and Don were in Rome? There was only a brief scene with Joan (the redhead).

I need to Netflix the show from the beginning. Don and Betty seemed "normal" in Rome, but I found it odd that Betty turned ice-queen so quickly upon returning home.

12. It would take WAY more than an Hermes scarf before I'd tumble
with Duck. That was just icky.

You should definitely watch the first two seasons, they were good. :)

31. I think he kind of got naked in the first show of the season
if I remember correctly. As attractive as I think he is, he is rather ordinary without the suit. The suit contributes to that bigger than life, handsome hunk of granite look.

32. Agree re the suits...
they definitely add to the appeal. Although, he did look pretty damn sexy in his jammies and tousled hair.

3. I just don't like the teacher character
I don't know, but she really gets on my nerves. Did people really jog in 1963? In the middle of the night?

Anyway, I hope they bring Sal back soon. He hasn't been in hardly any scenes this year, and I think his story is one of the most interesting on the show. I hate how they develop a character and then that character disappears for four episodes.

4. First Joan, then Sal.
I wish they'd fire Betty Draper instead. She's getting tiresome. And we need more Peggy.

10. Although sports bras clearly weren't invented yet
As someone who only started to get active AFTER the invention/marketing of the sports bra, I noticed last night that the teacher/jogger was bouncing so much that she must have been very uncomfortable. So at least they got that right.

And in an earlier episode, Don was talking to one of the other parents from her classroom, and he mentioned that he ran as well, and the script slid some comment about how odd it was to go out running. So they acknowledged that running/jogging is sort of an anachronism.

the cowboy with the 1000 mile stare is right for that era.

7. Way too much Don and Betty the past couple of weeks
One of the posters at the Television Without Pity forums said she felt that the writers were concentrating on the two leading characters at the expense of the supporting cast. There are tons of story lines to explore on that show, but all we see is Don jumping through hoops for Coo-coo Hilton, and poor bored Betty writing adolescent love letters to a man she ultimately refuses to put out for. Then they turn around and try to show us how cultured she is by the fact that she studied anthropology and can speak Italian!
I really wanted to know what happened with Sal after he finished lying to his wife in the phonebooth? Did he have an encounter with one of the guys in the background? Or did he go somewhere & harm himself (I hope the hell not, but he could be that depressed)? But no, we have to suffer through Don shtupping the schoolmarm! Boring!

I know Jon Hamm & January Jones are hot right now, but c'mon, this is an ensemble show! Or at least it used to be.

I was ready to throw up last night. Still well done but, getting bored with their minutiae.

The maid's character needs to be explored.........

13. Yes, I like Carla
All those Housecats (I'm using Grandpa Gene's terminology here) at the Barry Goldwater meeting who were poo-pooing the Civil Rights Movement. Then Betty came right out and said to Carla that it's not the time for civil rights.
My heart ached for Sal. He was most definitely sexually harassed, and there's not thing one he could do about it.

16. Way too dark for me....
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 11:24 AM by Richardo
Sal's getting fired; Don reverting to horndog, Hilton's sudden dark side, Betty's not-quite-dalliance, the creative team bombing, Harry's flubbing, Roger being an asshole, but not a FUNNY asshole. Even Campbell was just in the episode to cough, I guess.

Not one of my favorites. Maybe when it comes out on DVD I'll listen to the producer/director try to explain it.

19. I Think the Real Question is...
...Why is John Hamm so ... delectable?

That aside, I agree with all of you who have said that the OTHER characters need some attention. I want to know what Pete thinks of Peggy's and his baby. I remember him saying "Why would you tell me that?" but I don't know if he was posing that question in response to Peggy's having a baby for him, Peggy's saying she could have had him if she wanted to, or any of the other things she said in that conversation. I was kinda wishy-washy about Pete, but after he got that poor German girl to sleep with him, he was definitely placed in the "Hate" column.

I'd like to know more about Carla too. I'd like to see more of Kitty. I'd like to feel some relief in the fact that the 20-something secretary ran away with all of Roger Sterling's money.

Come on, Mad Men!

20. It does seem like there would be more about Pete &
Peggy and the baby. He doesn't seem like the type who would settle for so little information about his child since he seems so controlling.

21. True!
I feel like the show is trying to withhold information on Peggy/Pete/baby so that they can release it on a finale or something. It's so much drama in their relationship that they want to make us wait for it until the finale, which would hook us for the next season.

That may be wrong. Maybe they will get to it soon.

I agree with you. I don't see how Pete isn't more pressing about the baby since, as you said, he has to be in control of everything. It was just a single conversation (and maybe also a hateful stare from him to her), and that's it.

22. But Pete wants nothing to do with having children.
He put Trudy off repeatedly when she talked about trying harder to get pregnant, and he had a fit when Trudy contacted the adoption agency. I think Pete just doesn't want kids, ever, and was genuinely puzzled about why Peggy told him about their baby. I think he believes he dodged a bullet and it's better to just forget all about it.

23. When was that conversation?
I though I had seen them all and I don't remember it. I guess if it was during my season 1 and 2 catch-up blitz I might have forgotten it.

I thought the writers were holding the news back from Campbell for dramatic arc purposes.

26. The conversation with Pete and Peggy?
I think it was sometime during the second season. She wanted him to know that she could have forced him to marry her, but decided not to. BAsically, she cut him a huge break. He was pissed that she told him about any of it.
