no cell service when at open sea. It was GREAT!

3. I am trying to find a good answer about the range (from a tower)

for a cell phone. I don't have a good answer. I'm going to go out on a limb and say, with the power most phones use, 10 or 20 miles, maybe a little more.
You can get a range extender, which just ups the power of the signal to go further.
If you want universal (almost) coverage, (check their coverage map), get a satellite telephone. They send your call up to the satellite, rather than thru' a tower, and thus you can get coverage in Siberia, on the desert island where Amelia Earhardt went down (or did she) and much of the ocean.
Also, the ships have radio phones, ... not free?
