On the way home the other night, Sepp and I saw something that looked like Bad Craziness Happening. I locked our doors and he pulled over and gave me the phone to call it in. The 911 operator kept asking me things like whether the people who were fighting were connected (how the hell should I know? "Just a sec, I'll stop and ask!") and whether anyone was injured. I told the operator that I was out of line-of-sight and NOT going back to look, and finally--it seemed like reluctantly!--she dispatched officers.
Yesterday I read the police blotter, and what we saw had started as a robbery. A witness tried to intervene and was attacked. Then there was an attempted vehicular homicide by one of the robbers' accomplices. Then shots were fired at the witness. Fortunately, the police had been dispatched just before the weapons came out, and all of the robbers were arrested just after the gunfire.
It's weird to know that I was the one who called the police so they could get there before anyone actually got killed, and before the criminals could get away with the wallets they stole from a couple of hapless ordinary people.
