I need a good cole slaw recipe on the hoo hah....
Today is my slow cooked barbeque ribs day and I need a great cole slaw recipe to go with.

There are lots online, but none that I know to be tried and true. Can anyone help? :hi:

4. Maybe hoo ha means something else where he's from.
Here, it means 'front bum'.

11. here it means 'on the fly' or 'in a hurry'
and the thing that does the flying is the term for front bum around these parts.

Also, I have LayDee parts, just so you know.

However, I think you've just invented a new Lounge topic for the millennium :D

3. Tricolor Coleslaw
I've made this one many times and it always comes out good :)

Makes 4 cups; serves 6-8

2 cups shredded red cabbage
2 cups shredded green cabbage
1 cup shredded carrots
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, or 1.5 tbls dried
3 tbls vegetable oil
2 tbls cider vinegar
1 tsp dried mustard
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt, or to taste
freshly ground black pepper, to taste

1. In a large bowl, toss together both cabbages, the carrots, and parsley.
2. In a smaller bowl, stir together the oil, vinegar, mustard, sugar, and salt. Pour the dressing over the salad, grind pepper on top, and toss to combine. Let stand at least one hour to wilt.

Variation: Add 1/2 cup finely chopped green bell peppers to the salad.

This recipe is from the cookbook 1000 Vegetarian Recipes by Carol Gelles

5. You've just unintentionally cracked me up...
Central CT, where I grew up, hoohaw is a slang term for the female genitalia. So...I totally read that wrong at first.

I usually use just a simple mix of slaw (pre-mixed in the bag: white cabbage, red cabbage and shredded carrot...about 1lb. I rinse it well, then put it in the salad spinner to dry it.) with vegannaise (I guess mayo would work), salt, pepper, celery salt (all to taste) and about 1tsp. of cider vinegar. No need to get complex. If you were ambitious, you could shred your own slaw mix.

7. beef or pork?
if pork

mayo, add a little at a time to moisten, not drench
garlic salt (to taste)
lemon juice (very little)
kosher dill pickle, diced (NOT relish)
black pepper (to taste)
small amount of celery salt (optional)

if beef...same as above except

Use relish, mixture of sweet and dill
a pinch of sugar
leave off celery salt

allow either to set up in fridge for at least 30 minutes/stir before serving

8. Keep it Simple. People get all crazy with their cole slaw. no need.
all you need is shredded cabbage, a little vinegar, a little mayo and salt and pepper. Really, the water content in the cabbage means that you don't need a lot of vinegar or mayo. Maybe a teaspoon of vinegar and a tablespoon of mayo. Let that sit in the fridge and then taste it.

Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 02:19 PM by ipfilter
1 1/2 cups mayo
1/2 cup white sugar
1/3 cup white vinegar
1 tsp celery seed (very important)
2 carrots finely chopped
1 head of cabbage finely chopped

Mix mayo, sugar, vinegar, and celery seeds in a bowl and toss with chopped carrots and cabbage.

This has a nice balance of vinegar and sugar. I like my slaw sweet with a sharp bite. This works great with pulled pork. Don't skip the celery seeds.

Oh, and don't put it in the hoo ha. That's not where it goes.

28. Here's the coleslaw recipe I use (imitation KFC coleslaw).
Cole Slaw (Kentucky Fried Chicken recipe)

Ingredients
- One medium to large head of finely diced cabbage
- 100 grams finely diced carrots (I use a full cup, and I buy the pre-shredded, bio
carrots from the Coop)
- 30 grams (two tablespoons) finely minced yellow or white onion
Dressing
- 75 grams white, granulated sugar
- A pinch of salt (about 3 grams)
- Half a pinch of fresh, ground black pepper
- 60 milliliters of milk
- 120 grams mayonnaise (I use French mayo from Migros)
- 60 milliliters buttermilk
- 22 milliliters (1.5 Tablespoons) white vinegar
- 27 milliliters (2.5 Tablespoons) lemon juice
How-to
The cabbage and carrots must be finely diced.
Pour the cabbage and carrot mixture into a large bowl and stir in the minced onions
Prepare the dressing, mixing with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy
Pour over the cabbage/carrots/onion mixture and stir thoroughly
Cover the bowl and refrigerate several hours or overnight before serving.
Serve cold.
Makes a great side dish for grilled items or fish.

29. That looks good :)
Maybe I can substitute Veganaise and coconut milk for the dairy...

Ever since I used that one I posted above, that's the one I use whenever I make coleslaw. I also use the 1mm slicer disk on my old Cuisinart for the cabbages and I think the medium shredder disk for the carrots. It might be interesting ot use the smallest of the julienne disks for the carrots next time and see how that turns out :)

30. You're FANCY!
I don't even have a food processor. I use CMW's big sushi knife (don't tell him) to cut up the cabbage. I grate the carrots, though. :)

31. If I have to grate more than 2 cups of anything
I get the monster out and let it do all the grated-knuckle-sparing work :P

I have a nice (and sharp) 7" vegetable cleaver I use as my chef's knife and it'll make short work of a cabbage, too, when I don't need even slices :)
