question about Open Office/microshaft office
or whatever it is called. Can it open an Open Office document with the .odt file name or do I have to save it as a .doc file or rather .rtf, if I want the recipient to see my actual format?

Is .rtf common? The person I want to send this too is not real computer savy (like me - ha!)

1. not entirely sure I understand your question...
...but if I do, then the answer is that MS Office programs cannot open OpenOffice .odt files. But as you noted, OO can save in native word format, as well as .rtf and it can export to PDF. I use both office suites, but usually OO-- when I need to exchange files with MS Office users, I just save in their native format.

Is that what you were asking?

3. Google Docs can also open an .odt file, and then save it as a Word file
It's pretty easy to make an account and upload a file...

4. in my experience you have to send it as a .doc

i just save a copy as a .doc and send it along and i've never had a problem. you could also copy and paste it to notepad and send it as a .txt, that's worked for me as well. unless there's formatting involved, that doesn't work so well with notepad.

5. it was a letter I wrote on some "stationery" I made up
(don't laugh) but the picture I had at the top wouldn't transfer when I changed the file to .doc so I just did the pdf and it worked perfectly. (I wanted to show off, in addition to the content of the letter - am I bad?)

7. In my experience, RTF documents saved by Open Office are freaking huge
In one case, I used Word to save an RTF document, and it came out at about 425K. But when I saved that exact same document in RTF format via Open Office, it was 2.5 megs.

8. Save it as an RTF to move it to any other word processor.
There are a few things than NO two word processor combinations handle well, like bullets and numbered lists. I move stuff between OO on the PC, MAC and Linux with absolutely no problems. OO will open and save native M$ documents (including Excel) so if it is a .doc or .xls, you can just open it, edit it, and save it.
