2. Down or up? What time of day?
Mine varies.

At work I'm on 16 Mbps down, 7.5 Mbps up.

At home I'm subject to anywhere between 7 and 12 Mbps down but only 348 Kbps up.

5. Where's that deal?
I'm on $50 a month, though that deal does come with basic broadcast cable.

That's fantastic actually, for America anyway.

Virgin in the UK offer 50Mbps service bundled with phone and a basic cable TV package for £46 a month - the 50Mb on its own is £50 a month. - works out at $75/mo.

If you take their basic package: 10Mbps broadband, phone, basic cable TV, you get a bill of £25 a month - or $42 a month.

Their top service: 50Mb broadband, all the channels, unlimited phone, DVR, Netbook with 3GB mobile broadband: £83/month - $137 in US money. I was paying at one point to Time Warner Cable $120 a month for digital cable with not all the channels and the broadband package. No phone. No free netbook with mobile broadband.

Mark.

11. 56k here
Yeah, I know, I know...

It's taught me patience, though. It has ticked me off when I see all these computer games that are download only, though, and it would take me a full day to DL them.

Pretty darn fast at home. Would be faster if my computer wasn't older than dirt. I REALLY need to get off my ass and save the money for a new one.

16. WTF?
I'm on really slow dial-up - normally the little icon shows 24kbps, occasionally 26.1 or 16.9 if it's raining (if it even stays connected). The test you posed showed 22 download - about right, but the upload speed was 320kbps! why? if I could download that fast I would feel like I was in the modern world almost.:wtf:

But I'm fine with that.

23. "Internet speeds vary across USA, leaving a 'digital divide'"
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2009-08-24-speeds-digital-internet_N.htm

The average Internet download speed in the USA is 5.1 megabits per second, though consumers' online experiences can vary dramatically, depending on where they happen to live, a new report from the Communications Workers of America says.

On balance, speeds in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic were faster. Speeds in the South and in rural areas were markedly slower, according to the CWA's report — "Speed Matters" — out Tuesday.

Delaware, for example, averages 9.9 megabits per second. That's almost double the national average and triple the speed of Idaho (2.6 mbps), Arkansas (3.1) and Alaska (2.3). Data are based on feedback from more than 413,000 Internet users who took an online test between May 2008 and May 2009, CWA says.

The big swing owes to the way broadband is deployed. In the U.S., it's basically up to individual companies to decide where to offer broadband. Big broadband players such as Verizon have tended to focus on densely populated areas, where they can get more subscribers.

Mine is 5312 and 550, so I'm about average.
