"Mad Men" - Is it really "all that"?
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 04:20 PM by jefferson_dem
I've missed the first two seasons but have become fascinated with all the hoopla (from reliable sources) and am considering jumping into it, starting tonight.

First off, is the series really "all that" or just another hyped up teevee period piece?

Second, is there anything I need to know that will bring me up to speed on the characters/series?

1. It's beautifully filmed and acted. Catches a stylized version of the 60s. Eps on online
Summary of the eps are all online

3. I watched the first season...
... and had no interest in watching any more. The first few episodes were good. Then they started putting in plot twists that just came off as looking silly and implausible.
By the end of that season it really did look more like just a period piece.

4. I like it but, I love period pieces so perhaps I am not objective.

8. It seems to be a little late to the pop culture party...

I'm surprised it didn't appear last decade when everyone got all misty-eyed about, and brought back, The Rat Pack, cigar smoking, gentleman's clubs, Hef, etc...
Y'now, things from that period and mindset.

12. It's fantastic
Caveat: It's understated. There's no blood and guts, no bonk-over-the-head drama. So if you prefer your TV "in your face", don't bother. But if you appreciate superior acting and amazing writing, I say go for it.

However, I'm a purist, so I wouldn't start with this season--I'd start from the beginning, to really get to know the characters. Just my $0.02.

15. Friday Night Lights is better
j/k I haven't seen Mad Men. But I can tell you FNL does live up to the Hoopla.

16. I was thinking similar, because I like Christina Hendricks
from her days as Mal's nemesis on Firefly... there is something about her I can't quite put my finger on.
