Anyone know what this could be? (Photos)

So, we were sitting on the stoop Friday night having a beer...when we noticed a very LARGE (inch to inch and a half) yellow jacket/wasp(?) flying around and then it dove into the grass. I got up in a few minutes to see if it was there. In that short time it was already burrowing into the ground. About 45 minutes later, there was a small mound of dirt. The next morning this is what I saw. I looked up "digger bees" but didn't get enough of a look at it to actually know if this is what it is. From the nest, does anyone know. It's been very hot and humid here in the Northeast if that helps. Thanks

1. Ground-digger wasp?
http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/iiin/bdigwas.html

They're HUGE. Also known as cicada-killers. We have a few around here, but they're beneficials, pretty mild wasps, so I leave them alone. I actually leave all wasps alone unless they're near a high-traffic area, since they're good predator bugs.

However, the nest is 4 -5 feet from our walkway and 15 feet from our front door. So far so good.
No reason to stir up a hornet's nest, I have enough of that dealing with the "birthers", racists and the deathers! :scared:

2. Wow!
I do know that several types of bees/wasps build nests in the ground...but I could not tell you the exact type.

Be careful with that thing....seriously.
