Let's do our semi-annual "What states have you been to" DU Lounge survey
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 10:56 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
Here are the ground rules a la Tommy_Carcetti.

To qualify as having been to a state, you must either:

a) Have walked on the actual ground in the state
b) Have walked in a structure permanently affixed to the ground in the state

What does count:
a) Airplane layovers in which you deboarded the plane and entered the airport terminal (even if you didn't leave the terminal itself)

What does not count:
a)Airplane layovers where you never deboarded the plane
b)Flying over a state without having landed there
c)Driving through a state without getting out of the car and walking around.
d)Having been to a state as a baby before you had a conscious memory of being there

With that being said, here is my list:

Maryland
Florida
Virginia
North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Pennsylvania
New Jersey
New York
West Virginia
Delaware
Connecticut*
Vermont
Kentucky
Texas**
Nevada
Arizona

I have also been to the Bahamas, Ontario and Quebec. Plus Washington, DC which isn't a state, but I've been there.

*Brief stop for gas only after making a wrong turn in New York. (Although I briefly drove through it last time I was in New York--the White Plains airport is right along the Connecticut border and you have to briefly enter Connecticut to get back to New York)

**DFW Layover only

I once landed in Birmingham Alabama en route to Kentucky but never deboarded, so I don't count that as an official visit.

Despite my limited travels, I can say I've been in all four mainland US timezones.

12. I heard that. And my family was too big to be able to buy airline tickets to anywhere.
So we piled in a camper and drove all over. In 1976 we took a bicentennial tour of New England but we never made it to Maine or Rhode Island.

You should visit the Pac NW whenever you can. It's absolutely gorgeous. Several of my siblings live in Washington state now. So much so that most people assume I was born and raised in Seattle or Olympia. I tell them "No, Chicago. Everyone left *ME*!" On one of my visits to Washington, we took a long weekend to visit Oregon and it's breathtaking as well. Trees, mountains, ocean...everything that Illinois does NOT have.

Believe it or not, it's not all just Orlando and Disney World.

I have zero desire to visit Disneyworld. My kids claim they have had a deprived childhood.

20. Hee hee.
My dad hated Disney World because of all the sprawl it created in the Central Florida area. He always said my mom was welcome to take us, but neither myself nor my sisters ever expressed a desire to go there, so we never went. I've been going to Florida since I was a baby and living in Florida for 12 years and I've yet to set foot in Disney World proper (the closest I've been is the Downtown Disney area, which is free to go to). I honestly can't say I really feel deprived, although I think my wife will want to go when our daughter is old enough.

The Keys are beautiful. There's not much better than driving over the Seven Mile Bridge and seeing miles upon miles of tropical blue water on the horizon. You'll close your eyes and you can still see it, it's that vivid. If you go, check out Bahia Honda State Park. The thing about the Keys that few people realize is there are very few beaches, but Bahia Honda has a great one. The water is crystal clear and you can wade out beyond the sandy area to the coral reef area and snorkle around all day and see many different species of fish.

10. MIA is crazy.
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 10:40 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
My sister stayed overnight with me when she was flying to Belize via MIA the next morning around 9 am. Thankfully I decided to leave extra early (like 5:30 am) to drop her off, because after I saw the lines at the airport there would be no way she would have gotten to the gate if I had left at a later time.

Hence if I'm flying out I always use either Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach.

ND OH OK OR PA RI SC SD TN TX UT VT VA WA WV WY

i.e., all but AK HI MN WI by car. Western states mostly by family vacation as a youngster (and might have clipped a corner of MN), eastern (plus TX and AR) as driver. Oh, and I flew to WA and CA (well, really, I rode in a plane ... 'flew' is just an expression).

MN by airport only.

Went to school in six states (counting postdoc); worked in nine.

Oh, and of course, DC.

53. Why does driving across the state not count but a layover in the airport does?
I mean at least you'd see the state if you drove across it. Anyways Texas New York and DC. And a few Mexican border towns in high school.
