1. That was the second 100% that Stevie had to offer
Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 05:34 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
Marvin and Stevie were similar...Smokey pretty much stayed Smokey over the course of his career (and for Smokey, that was more than enough), but Marvin and Stevie both offered a catalog of pop / love songs unequaled in the history of music, THEN had almost a SECOND career of music that was perhaps more mature, less about being young and in love and holding hands...because adults either look back FONDLY on that kind of thing or resent it because in junior high / high school. love just flat-out passed them by...

...so the thing about "Ribbon In The Sky" that ASTOUNDS me is NOT that Stevie wrote it.

It's the fact that the guy who wrote "My Cherie Amour"...a song that chokes me up to THIS VERY DAY...wrote it.

2. What does a ribbon in the sky mean anyway?
I never figured that out.

3. I always looked at it as a metaphor, something you weren't SUPPOSED to figure out...
...the song obviously affected you on an emotional level...hence your post...and maybe that was all that Stevie was trying to accomplish.

Kind of like the writing of Jack Kerouac...if you look at the literal meaning of the words on the page, it's "WTF?" time.

But if you let them strike a glancing blow across your face, you're right where the author WANTED YOU TO BE.

4. I always have and always will love Stevie Wonder. Even though I absolutely hate
"I Just Called to Say I Love You" and "Part-Time Lover" and "Ebony and Ivory", I can completely forgive him those missteps because of songs like Ribbon in the Sky, Overjoyed, My Cherie Amour, Higher Ground, Superstition, I Wish, I Was Made to Love Her, You Haven't Done Nothin'... the list goes on and on.

5. I'm with you on that.
I hate those songs but Ebony and Ivory is more tolerable than the others.
