I had to take in some school medical forms that had to be signed and sent off to NYU. the nurses decided that since I'm going to NYU I must think I'm too good for Alabama. I just sat there thinking "Know what? I do."
:banghead:

4 weeks.. only 4 weeks left and then I'm outta here

3. What is wrong with people when they think there is something
wrong with going away to a prestigious school? Why are people so offended and insulted by other people being intelligent?

:wtf:

How about "Congratulations!" That was incredibly rude of her. x(

5. Ignorance and stupidity were glorified during the Boosh years.
Unfortunately, there are no signs of that turning around any time soon.

9. My two oldest kids went away to
our state's math and science academy when they were in high school.

Several people asked me if I thought my kids were too good to go to school in town. After the first such comment, I said, "Yes, I do," or "Damn! You're right!"

With attitudes like that, Ava, maybe you are too good to stay there. They don't deserve you.

4. dang, our little DU baby is going to college?
How can this be? Aren't you still 14? Am I not still 34?

And you do think you are too good for Alabama? That's sad.

And nothing sucks as bad as NYC. Unless it's the mini-apple or California.

Does Eric Altermann teach at your school?

11. That reprimand might carry a bit more weight
if your spelling, grammar and punctuation weren't all wrong.

There is nothing wrong with feeling better than the spiteful ignorant people in Alabama who are trying to bring her down. She has posted often about her love of many things in Alabama. Anyone who pays attention knows that she loves the state, and many of the people in it. It was obvious to us that she was only referring selectively to the negative aspects of the state, such as the love of ignorance represented by the nurse.

You have to be in a really negative frame of mind to think that someone really dislikes an entire state and thinks she's too good for her own home. Were you jonesing that much to come in here and reprimand someone you don't even know?

14. I think she had a healthy reaction.
Perhaps you should turn your reprimanding eyes on those nurses who snidely put a stranger down.
It was the nurses who said that leaving Alabama for an education means an attitude that one is too good for Alabama.

16. I agree......in retrospect you will come to respect the place you grew up....
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 09:33 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
....even if it does seem backwards at times.

Growing up in Southern Maryland for 18 years, I couldn't wait to get out to go to college. I always complained how boring it was, how there wasn't any good stuff around, how backwards some of the people were, etc.

When I left for Florida, I swore that other than my family and friends who lived there, there was nothing redeemable about the place.

And I loved living in Florida because I knew I would love living in Florida. But a funny thing happened.....after two or three years, and several trips back to visit, I began to grow a nostalgia for the place I grew up at. I began to see the people and places there in a new light, and I had a new respect for it.

Do I still love living in Florida? Absolutely? Do I have any plans to move out of Florida? Not at all. But if for some reason I was forced to move back to Southern Maryland, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. I know now that having stepped back for a bit, there are good people, places and things about living there.

It's something you can only really understand after you've been away for a couple of years. Trust me.

Plus, I think you'll find that while there are great things about New York, it will have its flaws too. If you are setting yourself up to think you are going to an educated, enlightened utopia just because it is New York, well I don't know about that.

Last time I was in New York, I was rather disappointed that a lot of the people weren't all that friendly there. And I'm not meaning in the stereotypical, loudmouth New Yorker wiseguy. I mean more like stand-offish. It was kind of weird. But on the other hand, NYC has a lot to offer. So there's good and bad to everywhere you go.

15. Just another confirmation for you that you've made the right decision.
Some fish are meant to swim in larger ponds. Some people can't help being jealous
of the opportunities you have in front of you; some people spend their whole lives
wishing they'd reached for their dream.

17. Oh, but in some way it will always draw you back...
There is a famous story about William Faulkner and Katherine Anne Porter dining at a swanky restaurant in Paris. After draining the burgundy and the port, Faulkner fiddled with his glass and said, “Back home the butter beans are in, the speckled ones.” Katherine Anne Porter stared off into the middle distance and said, simply, “Blackberries.”

Good luck!

19. I never said I hate Alabama
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 11:15 AM by Ava
way to take my words and twist them. I was jokingly responding to their attitudes and questions about my leaving the state. At the same time everyone who loves themselves and has self-respect is too good for a place that makes them unhappy. That could be anywhere.. even NYC for some people. I cannot stand so many things about my state, but there are things I love about the state, mostly my family. It will always be where I'm from, but it isn't where I see myself going(or staying) in the future. Not that I need to explain myself, but here are a few reasons why I'm happy to be leaving that have nothing to do with the assumptions some have made.

A: There isn't a real film industry in Alabama.
B: There isn't a university in Alabama that has the type of film program I want to be part of.
C: I'm not happy with my surroundings in Alabama... and no, it isn't just because it is "boring" place.
D: When I visited NYC and the NYU area the first time I wasn't too crazy about it. The second time I loved it. The third time I couldn't see myself anywhere else. I turned down colleges in various parts of the country because I knew that NYU was absolutely the place for me.
E: The nurse murdered my arm.. I have a huge bruise where the needle went in and it's swollen up. x( ;)

I have a brother/sister type relationship with Alabama. I pick on it, talk bad about it at times, and am generally annoyed by it. At the same time I do love the state(or certain things about it) and will defend it when anyone else jumps on it. I'll miss my family, I'll miss my home, and I'll miss certain things about the state.. but I'm certain I'll be a much much happier person come August 25th. If that makes me a snob then so be it.
