More 35mm shots.. these are in color
I just returned home from a trip out of town. This afternoon I picked up a new batch of prints after waiting ten days(oh how I love not living in New York yet). I prefer the black and white photos I took, and I am waiting on prints from another roll of black and white. I’m still wasting too much film on blurred and under/overexposed shots. I’m slowly getting the hang of it. A few pics -

1. My dear Ava!
Ah, very nice!

But, sweetie...

You should be digital!

Shoot, upload into computer, VIEW!

Instant gratification!

2. first semester film students work with 35mm fully manual cameras
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 01:11 AM by Ava
that's what i took these with. i've uploaded digital photos here before, but only recently(a couple weeks) started working with a manual 35mm camera.

digital makes taking pictures very easy, yes.. but the object is the break us from that and force us to work with a fully manual camera that doesn't give instant results. you must know what you're looking at and know how the photo will turn out before seeing the result. it's frustrating, but interesting at the same time.

I do recall your saying this before...

Well, then...you've got your work cut out for you!

I'm sure you will work hard, and do well. I mean that!

4. you must do as you're told by teacher but that is truly awful logic

it's 2009 and teachers still don't know how students learn, i guess

anything that delays the time between you perform an activity and get a result makes learning that much more difficult -- digital doesn't make taking pictures "very easy," but the reason people who do a lot of digital learn more quickly to take better pictures is because of instant feedback

it's the way the brain works, you don't hit a puppy w. a newspaper because he crapped on the floor 10 days ago

i spent many, many years working with film, and when i switched to digital, then i still saw a HUGE improvement in the quality of the photos

all working with film does is delay your development because you're not getting instant feedback

when you do start working with digital, you'll see what i mean -- taking a thousand photos over 3 days and getting immediate results will improve your photos far more than taking a few 36 rolls of photos over 3 days and getting delayed results -- the difference in development of the skill is night and day

there will always be teachers who think misery is educational, it's too bad that educators don't spend more time being taught how learning really happens

film photography is expensive, bad for the environment, slows down your progress, and is being phased out anyway -- i smell a teacher/photography dept. that is just trying to hang onto jobs and pretend it's about helping the student

of course one must always be respectful to teachers and curricula even if they are idiots...

but yah they are definitely idiots sometimes

btw -- NICE JOB on the suncatcher photo, that's something special

5. These are very nice shots
I am curious though. Why are you getting into what seems to be a dying medium?

6. Since you have to send them off anyway, you might consider slide film
If you buy them in quantity, you can get 36 exposure slide film mailers for about $4 each. You just pop the roll of film into a mailer, paste on two 1st class stamps, and drop it in a mailbox. About 2 weeks later you get your slides back which you can view on a light board or a little handheld slide viewer.

The learning value of slides is much greater than negative film if you are sending them out for processing, because exposure errors will be corrected in the prints, but not so with slides. Most slide film tends to have more vivid colors also. I always liked the colors Fuji Sensia gave.
