Anyone ever have a dream about a loved one who died coming back?
Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 03:33 PM by Drunken Irishman
Not in the zombie way, that'd be freaky, but like not being dead at all? I'd have these dreams within the year of a death -- like with the grandparents I was extremely close with.

The dream would be me sitting there and in walked grandma and everyone was shocked, because we thought she was dead and it always turn out she was sleeping or something. I always felt really warm and happy during those moments and then you'd wake and realize it was just that - a dream.

That's when you'd get depressed again.

I have to think it is fairly common. I read an article (or maybe heard it on TV last year) the same type of dream from someone who was close with RFK. In the interview, he said he would have dreams where Kennedy would just enter the room as if nothing happened.

So, have you had those types of dreams? And isn't it a kick in the stomach when you wake up to realize it was just a dream?

1. Yes
My deceased mother has appeared in a couple of dreams.
In the first one, I thought she hadn't really died and it was all a mistake.
In later dreams, her being alive was just natural in the dream; I didn't think of her death at all.
The first one was a kick in the stomach -- it felt so real. Not so for the other ones.

2. That's how it's been for me.
The early dreams were all about the shock of her not being dead and then next set of dreams have always been how natural it is that she's alive.

I dreamed about my grandma again last night. It's like life moves on (I'm my age in the dream as opposed to 18, when she died), but she's just there. And it's as if she's been there all along.

3. My grandfather, too. He came back and sat on my bed and talked to me
for a while, then got up and walked away. I was about 5
when he died.

4. All of the time. I dream that my brother is alive and
that we were all mistaken about his death. Then I wake up. Sucks.

5. I've never had a dream where they 'came back', but I have
had dreams where they weren't dead.

And yes, reality in the morning is difficult.

7. yes
often. I was present at the time of death of my mother and of my fiance, so it must have really connected that they were gone, because, although I dream of them being alive it is in the same way that I dream of when my kids children. I am just dreaming of the past.

But, my best friend in Pensacola died while I was living in Texas. I never got to tell him goodbye, in fact, we had had a minor disagreement on the phone the week that he died. He died suddently of a heart attack. I keep dreaming of him coming back to life and telling me that he isn't really dead and then we are on our way to go out and eat and he starts turning transparent right in front of me and he tells me that he was wrong, he really must be dead. I usually wake from those dreams in a terrible state of mind.

8. Yes, it's quite common
I suppose is a part of the grieving process.

I dreamt about Mom right after my grand niece was born. I was very sad that she would not get to see her great-granddaughter. Then I dreamed that I was in the house waliking by the nursery. There was mom, sitting in the rocking chair holding our precious new little addition to the family.

:loveya:

It did fill me with peace that perhaps she knew afterall.

My parents have been dead for 15 years now, and I still dream about them from time to time. Though, it's usually somethng comforting now, rather than sad.

10. Yeah, with grandparents and my dog.
Occassionally, I'll have a dream where I think either one of my grandparents or my old dog is dead, and then I see them around. So I have to ask why I thought they were dead, and the response is always something like, "No.....they got old, but they're still around."

Sometimes I like to think that when someone in your life who has passed away--or even someone who might still be alive but you are no longer in contact with--pops up in a dream, it is their own special way of communicating with you. Just a personal little philosophy.

11. I've had both nice dreams and mixed-up dreams involving..
grandparents, an uncle, and one of my dogs. Some psychics think that if you have dreamt about a dead relative, it means they have passed on. Nice to think about at least.

12. That's funny you said that
My father was out of my life at 13 and I hadn't dreamed about him in decades. Then, one night, I had a dream that he took me for a trip into a land that was vividly colorful and serene. I woke up surprised, frankly, that the dream was so positive. Later, some time later, I learned that my father had passed away a little while before the dream.

13. All the time
My Grandmother has been dead for over 30 years and I just woke up from a nap where I dreamed I had to get ready to go to dinner with her and one of her sisters. Makes me wonder if Aunt Gertie has passed on now...

14. Yup. Friend since childhood.
First love of my life, no less (at least on my part).

She fell into heroin addiction and died in her early 30's in a county jail near her grandma's house.

And yes, I've had dreams about her since then.

I have also dreamt of the other love of my life, a long-ago shiny black cat named Kwan Yin. But that isn't the same, I suppose.

15. Frequenly after mom died. And even now every once in while but it's
not like everyone is surprised she is there. More like some part of me in the back of my mind recognizes that she's gone and there fore shouldn't be there, even while the rest of me accepts everything as normal. Hard to explain, really.

16. In mine they're just still alive (ie nobody's shocked) and then when I wake up I'm pissed
that they're actually gone. My mom and one of my best friends, specifically, show up a lot in my dreams (not, fortunately, at the same time). I'm getting less pissed and just think of it as a way of getting to enjoy knowing them again.

17. Yeah, same here, just still alive.
My mother died last year and every so often she's in one of my dreams, maybe I'm talking to her or I'm at her house. Sometimes I'm still living at home with her. In a way it's nice to see her again, but in another way it freaks me out a little.

19. Those are the dreams I have now.
When the death was more recent, it was always us acting in shock at the sight of a loved one.

Now, they're apart of the family like they left. And it isn't like we're stuck in the past, either. The dreams, from what I can tell, take place today.

I had one with my grandmother last night which made me think about those earlier dreams and why I posed this question.

In the dream, we were in my basement room (though that has changed, since I don't live there anymore), but I was my current age and I was with my cousin -- who was only like a few months old at the time of her death and is now 6). She was her real age in this dream and I remember talking to my grandma about how the Utah Jazz were getting ready to play in the NBA playoffs.

Wild, I know, but we were both big Jazz fans.

18. I've had two kinds. I've dreamt of people who are now dead,
and when I remember the dream when I wake up I know it was a dream. I also had an experience when I met with my dead cousin, and in the dream I knew he was dead and my heart was pounding to see him in front of me. We talked, and took care of some business. Other people might call that a dream, I think it was a visit.

I have several relatives who've seen other members of the family on their way out.

He died when I was about 7. I think we would have been quite close if he was still alive.

And, yeah. I get pissed off when I realize that it's only a dream.

21. In my dream,
my (still living) brother had already joined my (passed-on) father at a table on a hill top under a tree.

I came walking up the hill to join them, thinking, "Oh, my brother's already here, and Daddy's dead, but not at this moment."

23. Yes.
All my life I was very close to my paternal grandmother. She died when I was 36 and it was a terrible jolt for me, even after six months of her illness. I married a year and half later and always regretted that she wasn't alive for she and my husband to meet. One night after I'd been married about 4 years, I was sleeping alone in our spare bedroom because I had a broken leg and couldn't go up the stairs. She came and visited with me that night and I began crying very hard when she had to leave, and I woke up crying very hard for real.

I haven't had any more dreams in which she appears so I believe that it was really a visit. I think she wanted me to know that she was happy for me. I think she knew that while she was living and needed me I wouldn't have met and married my husband.

25. I often dream about my friend Bill, who died 25 years ago
He's always, "Why do you look shocked?"
And I say, "Because you're dead!"
And he laughs like it's no big deal. He was always like that, even in life.

27. Yes, but most of those dreams were very confusing
I still can't make sense of them...one of which was when I dreamed that my Grandmother was walking across her living room ( she always called it the parlor ) and she was walking SUPER fast on her walker from her bedroom to the kitchen....I remember calling out to her asking what was wrong since she also looked very angry as she was going super fast on this walker.....when she reached the kitchen, the dream ended.

There were plenty of other bizarre dreams I have had...can't get into it now, far too much to even type here

28. I have a great aunt who died about ten years ago. I occasionally dream that she is still
alive and living in an old age home and I am bad because I haven't visited her. Then I wake up. I think it is because I was living far away when she died and though I went to the funeral I wasn't much of the way involved. She would think it was funny I'm sure.

31. I do all the time about my late husband.
In the dreams, the fact that he died, is a bad dream when to me, in the dream, he is very much alive. It's always a big let down when I wake up and realize the bad dream is my reality. He was an Irishman too. He used to see ghosts some times. He said he got it from his grandmother. He said she was fey and that he had a touch of it.

32. I've had many of those kinds of dreams about my father in the 30+ years
since he died. In those dreams, it often turns out that his death was a lie, and he had just been away for all these years. They leave me feeling slightly unsettled.

My mom passed away a year and a half ago, and I've only had one like that about her. But in that dream, she came back just to tell me and my siblings that she was okay now, not in any pain, and it was time for her to rest. It was a very comforting dream.

34. Grandaddy died 43 years ago and I still have that dream from time to time
his widow died maybe 12 years ago and the last 2 times I had the dream she was with him. I adored them both.

Interestingly I seem to have that dream when I am ill ..so it must have something to do with the depth of the sleep?

I have NOT had that dream about my mother yet.
