for the evening. Will call animal control in morning. Went back a bit later and no people calling/searching for dog. Hardly any of the estate houses had lights on. This is a weekend place for wealthy (by Seinfeld's house).

Sigh.

He has no collar but it sort of looks like his fur is used to having a collar on. Like a dent in his fur around his neck.

Gave doggie some water and some food. He has to sleep in the car tonight but I gave him a blanket.

Hope I did the right thing. But he wasn't just trotting along like he was going somewhere. More like mindless ambling in a circle.

Sigh.

He looks like he's sad.

PLEASE SEND HAPPY THOUGHTS TO THE BEAGLE! HE'S A GOOD BOY WHO WANTS HIS FAMILY.

1. Leave the window down a bit in case it gets too hot
You did the right thing. Though, I'd hesitate about sending him to animal control. Around here, they only keep the dog for a few days before putting it down.

3. Any No Kill Shelters Near By?
Some specialize in the older dogs. Those "long in the tooth" have a lot of love to give too. Far too many dogs get dumped these days. It's the economy but it's also a dispoable society that thinks pups and kittens are cute but older animals are just a drag. Poor fellow wondering what he did wrong to end up homeless.

doesn't sound like he's come a long way. And that collar dent probably does mean he has recently slipped his collar. So I think he's got people probably not far away.

8. Good vibes for the doggie!

I hope he wasn't abandoned. :(

When someone passes away and leaves a pet behind, far too many families will abandon the pet rather than searching for a new home. That's how two of my cats were abandoned before I took them in. x(

I hope this is not what you have there. But a pet that looks like a well-cared for, well fed, definitely an indoor animal, that has had the collar and all tags removed, found wandering outside... It doesn't sound so good.

Edit to add: In the event that he is just lost, a vet can check to see if he is chipped. That would identify the owner. Even if the owner has passed away, a chip would ID the previous owner and identify the dog and the dog's medical history for whomever takes him in.

10. Thank you for helping a dog!
I always wanted to have a hotline for lost and found animals in my town, so if someone like you found a dog or cat and kept it safe overnight, you could call a number and the dog's/cat's description would be put on a website as well as on a list so when the owner calls the number they could be told where their pet was.

It turns out there is a service you can pay for if you've lost a pet- and on the website you can see missing pets in your area if their owner used this service~ https://www.findtoto.com/search-our-lost-pet.html
One morning we got an automated call from "findtoto" describing a lost schnauzer in our area, and I jotted down the web address and looked it up. My husband came in and said a little girl was walking by with a schnauzer on a leash, asking people if they lost this dog. I told my husband about the call, so he rode his bike to catch up to the girl and gave her the "findtoto" url jotted on a piece of paper so she could see if it was this lost schnauzer. Later I looked on "findtoto", and the schnauzer had been found, so maybe the service had worked!

11. Sending happy vibes to the sad beagle
It sounds like someone owned him and loved him once. Maybe still and this is just an accident. I hope so. I hope it all gets sorted out.

You did the right thing. Bless you.

14. Beagles do tend to run sometimes.
It is part of the breeding for them to run. I used to work for a lady that bred beagles for field trials and every so often she'd come into the office just cussing a blue streak because somebody got out, caught a scent, and took off at a run. According to what she said, it was her opinion that any beagle worth his (or her) salt was gonna take off on a run sometime or another.

I have to wonder if your old guy was just being a beagle and got lost. I find that a lot more comfortable than thinking somebody threw him away like a used kleenex.

15. They do tend to follow their noses, and often wind up in strange
places.

Hope he is doing well....
