8. My dear mix!
I've been up to the viewing platform, and it is amazing! Alas, no digital pics...

It is a most amazing structure...

I would prefer to see it left as it was originally constructed. I don't think it needs any modifications.

14. Hi CaliforniaPeggy
When these pictures (with the proposed modifications) came out, there was an outcry about changing such an iconic structure, to the point that the pictures were branded a "hoax." The firm that produced the designs, however, insists that there was indeed a competition to change the tower's design and structure. Who knows?

16. It was partially closed for repairs when I was there
We could only go to the Premier étage.

It was still a magnificent view, showing the huge apartment buildings surrounding the part of the city where they won't allow high-rise development.

24. That's not right
Both the Cologne Cathedral and the Washington Monument were completed before the Eiffel Tower and both are taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza.

(Also, there was some dispute over its height, but the Lincoln Cathedral was allegedly taller than the Pyramids and constructed well before the Cologne Cathedral or the Washington Monument.)

22. I've only been up the the second stage.
My first backpacking trip back in '77. I thought I'd save some money. It's up to the next generation to make the top.

In the Great War, my grandfather was wounded and gassed. They sent him to Paris to convalesce. Later, it was a family story that he saw the Eiffel Tower from a distance.

My father was in the Merchant Marine and walked around the base of the tower on leave.

Then me the nascent world traveller.

Four generations to make it to the top.

celebration were still lit. At night it looked like a sparkly champagne bottle. It was so beautiful. I've been to Paris 3 times and never tire of looking at it.
