I bought some Hostess spongecakes of the type used for Strawberry Shortcake, and a bottle of that chocolate fudge hard-shell sauce. I poured the sauce into the depressions in the spongecakes to harden, then drizzled it back-and-forth over the cakes in a Bundt cake pattern. Now they're chilling in the fridge. I'll serve them with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

Sound good? :9

1. this does sound good, however....
spongecakes are not used for strawberry shortcake. The proper way to make strawberry shortcake involves a buttermilk biscuit.

And this is not negotiable.

2. Understood.
Anyway, what I'm making is not strawberry shortcake; it's "Strawberry Chocolate Surprise." The chocolate being the surprise... :-)

5. Steak Robért, with corn and garlic red baby mashed potatoes.
Steak Robért is thin-cut steak, marinated all day in a garlic and herb sauce, pan-seared, then slow-broiled in a skillet with red wine vinegar, a touch of sherry, rosemary and sweet basil. I don't have any wine in the house, other than cooking sherry, so my wife will stick with water, and I'll be drinking a nice cold porter. You are welcome to join us if you bring the champagne... ;-)

9. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!
you might be the first person who has agreed with me on the buttermilk biscuit strawberry shortcake. I think I will print your post to show to all my disbelieving relatives.

They think pound cake or angel food cake is involved.

15. I was an adult before I realized there was another way to make
strawberry shortcake other than the biscuit. Honestly, to me, the stuff made with pound cake or angel food cake isn't real strawberry shortcake. It's an alternate strawberry desert, but strawberry shortcake, it is not. So, no, you're not alone.

16. I must be the contrarian.
I think Strawberry Shortcake by necessity requires the use of shortcake, not angel's food cake or biscuits. Shortcake.

Flour.
Baking powder.
Salt.
Sugar.
Butter.
Shortening.
and maybe some Half and half.

Pour into a greased cake pan, bake at 450'F and when a toothpick comes out clean, cut into 3" squares. Top with fresh strawberries marinated in their own juices and some sugar and whipped cream that didn't come from a spray can.

Chan, dessert totalitarian.

13. But spongecake tastes better than a biscuit. You have to have grown up with biscuits to like them.

and I am sick unto death of the heretics who keep trying to pass off that spongey nonsense as a true shortcake.

Thank you......................

6. Top it off with a very light drizzle of Chambourde
It soaks into the cake and adds just a subtle touch that makes the desert sparkle.

18. It's kind of kooky. She'll love it. A little kahlua or chamboard in it would work also. nt
