One of my pet peeves...
Is the bumper sticker that says "Kill Your Television".

Not just because I love TV but because the sticker is on a CAR. When I watch a show, money doesn't go to a monarchy that exports Islamic fundamentalist television. As bad as the Networks are, they didn't fund the people that flew planes into a bunch of buildings.

People rag on TV all the time because they have this romantic notion that before televison families sat around reciting Walt Whitman or acting out Shakepeare...you know what kids did before TV? THEY WORKED IN FACTORIES! "Did you have a good day little Billy?" "Sure Mom, everyday is a good day when Im not killed in a mining accident."

Yeah, a good protion of TV sucks but a good protion of EVERYTHING sucks. Most people are NOT attractive or smart. Most books are Barbara Cartland or John Grisham or how to make a million dollars without adding to society.

The value of "value" is there isn't much of it.

So my TV has a sticker on it that says "Ride a bus, asshole".

2. how's this?
The sole purpose of the telly is to deliver brainwashed, conformist, soft-willed consumers to the market.

put that in your bumper sticker and smoke it :)

3. Hows this
that is a simplistic, psuedo intellectual answer to be expected from someone who would choose the fossil fuel belching, terrorism supporting, earth warming, death trap over the box that shows us two different CSpans as well as four 24 hour news channels.

Put that in your muffler and suck on it.

1. I intentionally put a smilie there to indicate non-attack
2. I dont own a car
3. IMO nothing i said contradicted what you said.
4. IIRC, what i said is a very close paraphrase of Marx. if you want to call that psedudo-intellectual, i do belive your argument becomes seriously less meaningful.

hmph.

10. I'm with you!
I love television and I do think, if used properly, it can be educational. If you watch the right stuff, it's great to have around. A lot of these people who have bumperstickers like that have TVs in their own homes I'm sure.

I'm a television production major and feel television, whether people like it or not, is an important part of our lives. It's links us together and it's entertaining too.

11. How do you reply to the statement that
television is first and foremost an advertising medium? (This applies to radio, most newspapers and magazines, too.) All of the programming is based on increasing ratings. Therefore, it's all trash and suspect.

I don't personally believe this wholeheartedly. I lean more towards the TV-is-a-huge-waste-of-time school of thought, but that, of course, is my lifestyle choice, so don't take this as a flame.

12. Eaasy response
get cable.

I find it hard to demonize people who attempt to get paid for what they do. almost everyone I know tries to get paid for what they do.

Is tennis primarily an adverting medium? They make most of their money from endorsements, not ticket sales. I guess its not "real" tennis unless you watch two old guys at a park chase the ball around for free.

Shakespeare was popular in Elizabeathen times because producers made money when they put his shows on...guess he sucked.

Most people who are considered "art masters" today, Michaelangelo, Rembrandt, Vega, et al, did their work for patrons that funnelled the artist vision into something morre palatable, guees they are all wankers.
