Crazy cat behavior
My one yr old male kitty Mandu was carrying leaves into the house last evening and arranging them on the carpet. He dropped one behind the couch and went after it so he could put it where he wanted it . I watched him doing this for well over an hour and occasionally he would rearrange them

I have never noticed any of my cats doing this before , but I have noticed leaves on the floor in the morning that were not there when I went to bed!

Has anyone else noticed this behavior in male cats ( or for that matter, any cat?)

1. I asked my cat about it and he said "Meow."
Hope that helps.

(no, I've never seen or heard of that behavior.)

5. Our boy cat does something similar with socks...
he picks them up from all over the house and places them in a central location (usually the middle of the living room) and then lays on top of them like hes going to hatch them. If you kick the pile around he gets mad and wrangles the socks back into proper their place. Heaven forbid you pick the pile up on laundry day. You get quite the chiding from him.

We've often wondered if cats can be OCD...

27. One of my parents' kitties used to do that.
Usually in the middle of the night, he'd collect socks and line them up in the hall. Sometimes he'd make this funny meowing crying sound. We called the socks his "babies."

Ahh, kitties. Endlessly amusing. :)

6. How interesting!
I would like to observe this behavior. Is Mandu friendly? When can I come over? ;) Should I bring bonito flakes or catnip - or both?

11. he is confused about his identity
I always had female cats . He is the first male cat I have had in ages. My two females, Tansy and Lilith have absolutely no nesting instince as far as I can tell , but them they were both "fixed" before they became moms.

10. One of my cats used to take her stuffed toys and arrange them around her food dishes
like she was having a tea party!

She stopped doing this when we got another cat who pretty much took over all the toys and became Alpha Cat. If she does play with a toy now, she looks nervously over her shoulder the entire time. It's kinda sad, but I don't want to interfere in their internecine squabbles.

14. my cats have nothing to do with each other
Tansy is 15 , and top cat around here .She eats first and rules with an iron fist. Mandu and Lilith are litter mates but they barely tolerate each other.

12. Some cats are artists.
Some will make arrangements of leaves, sticks, dead mice (live ones don't hold still) etc. Some make designs / patterns in dirt or in their cat box. Some paint if you let them.

13. Not with leaves but with pens and pencils.
We had a female cat that used to collect them. I'd blame the kids when I'd find a 1/2 doz or more laying around. Then one day I saw Missy in the hallway at the top of the stairs. She was making the sounds like a momma cat talking to her kittens. There were 1/2 doz. pens, all lined up, with her laying as if they were kittens nursing.

She's the same cat that loved the smell of BenGay and would become extremely mushy turning to obnoxious, complete with drool, if anyone put some on.

20. I have a male cat who has this "thing" for newspaper
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 12:45 PM by WolverineDG
scratches & rips it apart, even teeny tiny pieces....sometimes he's going at it so wildly, I can't hear the TV. :eyes:

I had a cat who had a "thing" for coca-cola bottle caps. She had quite the collection, too. After she died, I moved the sofa to clean behind it & found her last "stash."

And I also have a cat who must put her butt on my pants if I lay them on the bed. She won't sit on my shirts, or shorts, just my pants. And sometimes another cat will dare to place his or her butt on my pants too....she doesn't like that. :scared:

23. Ginger used to have a couple of really weird similar behaviors, but I think he outgrew them.
He had a couple of years when he was fascinated with bugs, especially beetles and Crane flies. His two favorite means of displaying his kills:
1. In his perfectly clean litterbox in the hallway outside the upstairs bathroom. (It's perfectly clean because Ginger prefers to do his business outdoors.)
2. Even weirder, in a straight line just under the edge of Call Me Wesley's side of the bed. This kinda freaked me out because when I'd vacuum under that side of the bed, I'd always find the beetles and Crane flies that looked like they were lined up at attention. :shudder:

:puke:

Brianna's thing is plastic packaging. She sits there and sniffs and chews on it like it's the coolest stuff ever created.

26. An old friend of mine had a cat who used to catch birds and bring them in
She managed to train the cat out of that little habit, but then the cat brought in leaves and presented them. Needless to say, she was heaped with lavish praise for the leaves. Which, of course, increased the number of "presents."
