3rd Amendment Advocates: How do you feel when a soldier or sailor just drops in to stay?
No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

This is good to know.

1. I'd probably respond with something like, "Helloooo sailor! If you won't ask, I won't tell!"
and at that point, I'm sure either he'd turn and leave, or I'd end up with one helluva fun weekend.

2. Define quartered?
I don't think any soldier should be cut into four pieces in any house. I don't care what the owner says.

3. My grandparents quartered a soldier during WWII
He was actually a Filipino soldier who was attending military training. I have some pictures of him in a photo album somewhere. The government paid them a small amount of money. My grandfather probably would have done it for free even if they hadn't paid. He was a WWI vet.

6. It was a great way to reduce costs...
... and to keep an eye on dissidents. Government thinks you're up to something, they post a soldier in your house for a few weeks.

9. It's in there for a reason
During the days leading up to the Revolutionary War, British units would just show up at people's doors and tell 'em, "We're staying here tonight. You sleep in the barn." They'd eat all the food in the house, totally trash the place and leave.

The 3rd Amendment is designed to prevent this from happening.

11. Ahem. The Founding Fathers were referring to the pelting of soldiers
By quarters, of course.

It was an early method to ensure that our militias were well-regulated.

12. Maybe it means you can't play "Quarters" with a soldier in your house

Perhaps the founding fathers did not approve of drinking games. Maybe a Beer Pong amendment is in order?
