Amazon had all these available for a steep discount. Have you read any of these? Comments? Additional suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Worse Than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush - John Dean

Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency - Barton Gellman

The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008 - Bob Woodward

Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches - John Dean

Conservatives Without Conscience - John Dean

Truth and Consequences: Special Comments on the Bush Administration's War on American Values - Keith Olberman

1. I read Conservatives Without Conscience.
Great book!

The best part of the story is that I was reading it on an airplane when the man seated next to me engaged me in conversation.

He was Mike Leavitt - former Utah governor and Bush appointee as EPA Administrator. :wow: FUNNY. He was a marvelously nice man, I must say.

2. Nixonland, by Rick Perlstein
I don't think you have to have lived through the times this covers--between the two landslide elections of 1964 and 1972--to appreciate how brilliantly Perlstein summarizes them, or the case he makes for them being the forge in which contemporary American politics was fashioned. I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable, though continually disturbing, book.

3. I'm embarrassed to post the last 4 books I bought
I found 4 hardback copies of Judith Krantz novels on Ebay. It was $8 for the 4. But Judith Krantz is like Brain Candy - great read for when you want to escape for an hour or 2 into some magical land of long time ago.

BTW the 4 books from Krantz are "Spring Collection", "Til We Meet Again", "Mistral's Daughter" and "I'll Take Manhattan". Spring and Manhattan were ok, I probably haven't read them in decades; however I love "Til We Meet Again" and especially "Mistral's Daughter". Both of those books took you on a journey that usually starts during a decade time of Parisian history. Plenty of love and betrayal, for some reason something that is borderline (but not quite) incestuous and usually with the Daughter or Granddaughter of the original heroine triumphing over all that was wrong in the world. The evil was usually a stepbrother in several of the books.

5. I have read two of the Dean books and Woodward's.
Dean's books are always exceptionally well-written and documented.

Have you read The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein? One of the best and most informative books I have ever read.

That one by Olbermann sounds good. Let us know how you liked it, OK?

6. Glad to hear the great recommendation on Dean since I ordered 3 of his books.
That's the second plug I've been given on the Shock Doctrine. I'll put that one on my wish list for next time.

:hi:

7. Angler is a must read, imo
that was a great read.

Woodward's book I read but don't remember much about it.

Don't know why I haven't read John Dean's books yet. I respect his viewpoint very much.

someone mentioned Family of Secrets. I'd suggest Kevin Phillips' book on the Bush Dynasty. Don't remember the title, but it is a much more thorough history of the Bush family, not just a series of semi-connected dots. It's not that it isn't a good read, just that Phillips (I think) does a better job.
