Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan apologized Sunday to the family of city council lawyer Larry Wilder after police released a photograph of Wilder sleeping in a garbage can.
At a news conference Sunday afternoon, Galligan said "police officers swear to protect and serve," but he said he believes "one or two officers" chose to embarrass Wilder "for political or personal reasons" by releasing the photograph to the news media. The photographs, apparently taken on an officer's private cell phone, were aired on local television stations and published in the Jeffersonville Evening News.
Galligan said he doesn't want other families to fear such embarrassment if they call the police for help.
A neighbor of Wilder's called police about 7 a.m. Wednesday after he saw a man in his garbage can, which was lying on its side with the contents scattered on the ground. The neighbor has said that if he had known the man was Wilder, he would not have called police because Wilder was a good neighbor.
Four officers responded to the call and when they determined it was Wilder, who lived across the street, they helped him home. He was not charged with any crime.
