7. All three of us must have the same dad.
Of course, that's easy enough to believe, with my dad.

We're not sure if my mom was his first or second wife, as he rambles on when he's drunk about a woman he "married" when he was stationed in France in the 50s. There's probably whole villages near Fountainbleu where all the men in my age cohort resemble me. Currently, "dad" is on wife #4....

3. Got some issues?
Sounds like they're far from resolved.

Good luck. No one should be in this much pain that they have to post it on a message board. I hope it gets easier for you..................

4. I just needed to vent.
Sometimes it feels good to release.

It's nothing new, though.

My father is the one with the issues. Unfortunately, we have to live with them. :eyes:

5. I know,
but the severity of your rant, in such a sad way, makes me sad for you. Don't let his issues bring you down. Live a rich, full, loving, happy life, and leave the pain behind ..................

Hoping makes it sound easy?

I just hope for you, didn't mean to get you riled.

My apologies. I'll stay away now..................

14. Ah no ... I didn't mean that.
I'm not riled.

Just the way you said it... 'leave the pain behind'. Sometimes the pain is cloaked in decades' worth of denial and sublimation... and it's hard to even recognize it, let alone leave it behind.

No worries. It was a nice thing you said. Thanks.

16. I live with the pain -
in one form or another, everyone does, I've learned in my many years on this earth. And, yes, it takes work.

I struggle every day and every night.

But that doesn't mean you don't do it. You do, because you want the good things that you never had......

8. I have three fathers
My natural father, my step-father, my adoptive father..i even have an ex-step father. I only call my adoptive father because he had no choice but to sign me up to be his son! :-) Plus, I got my last name from him.

9. Where can I buy that father's day card?
My father and I try to maintain an amicable relationship, but it's not always easy.

It's so hard to find a card that doesn't have all that "you're a great dad" crap on it.

until he quit drinking and really became a father several years before he died. I hope you and your dad can mend the rifts that separate you.

12. That makes me want to go ahead and call my dad today...
and tell him how fortunate I am.
My dad is such a wonderful man; I should have turned out to be a much better son.

I'm sorry for your history with your dad. It is still possible for people and things to change.

He even has an Obama sticker on his truck.

Generally, he's a good guy. It's just he can't keep his shit together long enough to be decent.

25. My father was no prize either
but I'm trying to learn to forgive. I want to forgive him because I want to be free of the past.

Have you ever thought of how much this pain is holding you back? I'm talking about the effect of your pain on you, not on your father.

27. I never knew my biological father and my step father was always cold and distant.
He is great man and I've wasted my life trying to the standards that I imagine he has. I imagine them because he never seemed interested enough to tell me what his standards actually were...

Hoo boy. Now you've done it. I'm gonna get all mopy about my father issues... :(

30. Well, at least you get to choose your friends. With family you get stuck with
the cards you're dealt. When you get dealt a lousy hand, sometimes the thing to do is to just fold, and move on.
