Cat sedatives or Prozac--your thoughts...?
Edited on Mon Jun-15-09 03:33 PM by amitten
Catnip doesn't work. Food, petting and playing don't work. Punishment doesn't work. Feliway hasn't worked. Bach Rescue Remedy hasn't worked. And I am not in a position to get my cat a "friend". The cat is not sick. The cat is suffering from bad anxiety that nothing can calm.

Point blank, my cat cannot or will not stop meowing in my absence. My roommates are going INSANE and are basically wanting me to move out. I am between a rock and a hard place and MUST find a way to shut this cat (whom I love dearly) up while I'm out of the house, or I will have to find a new place to live, which is not really a good option now.

Any experience you can share with kitty Prozac or the like? I am at the breaking point...

3. I'm taking him on Wednesday.
I would just like to go in with some of my own suggestions as well and see what he thinks.

4. vets will always try to indulge you
but, please, if you go in for a consultation, listen to what he has to say. He will have questions to ask but don't go in with a diagnosis or a remedy if you can help it. You kind of box the doc in by doing that.

possibly try meds for him. Words cannot describe how loud and annoying he can get--and it goes on for hours.

I love my cat dearly, but I won't give up my home for him. I need to find a way to keep him calm when I'm not home, and I'm running out of options.

5. Is the kitty free to roam while you are gone?
Do you keep him confined to a carrier, or a certain room?

This might sound odd; but one trick I learned when I had to leave my infant with a sitter was to give him a Mommy-scented luvvy. He liked an old nylon half-slip...it wasn't dirty or anything; it just smelled like me after years of use.

Anyway, maybe something similar would do the trick for your poor kitty.

I'm sorry it's so difficult right now. Let us know what the vet says. :hi:

6. Yes, he roams the house freely.
He just suffers anxiety when I'm away, even if others are around and caring for him. I can't leave for more than a day without him going ballistic...

8. I read an article about a kitty prozac it does exist.
I can't remember the name of the drug but your vet should know. Before you go to the vet go to peteducation.com and look for articles about nervous cats or excessive meowing. I hope that helps.
