if its any consolation ( and right now, probably not) ,I broke both of my wrists in 1983, and had casts on both arms up to my biceps( yes, just for wrists--to keep my arms bent at the angle the doctors wanted) for 5 weeks( and shorter casts for 3 more)... You do sort of get used to it, and even though it seems like its taking forever, the casts do come off one day, and little by little you start healing,and one day its become just another thing that happened to you, and generally the source of a funny story or two. One of the things I learned how to do was tie my shoes without using my thumbs. And don't be shy about asking for help. I had a buddy come by every couple of days to take my shirt off and put a new one on me, and several friends who fed me until I was strong enough to grip food--that took a couple of weeks. It was actually kind of amusing going to a restaurant and having friends feed you. We'd get a lot of stares, but of the sympathetic /laughing with us, not at us type.
