High school friend from Class of '69 commits suicide
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 09:32 AM by mnhtnbb
I had an e-mail from a very close friend and roommate in college this morning that the woman in this story was none other than one of the three other girls who was a cheerleader with us our senior year in high school. She was married to her high school sweetheart--a starter on the football team. They have two adult children--27 and 25. Family who were with her the night before say there was no indication she was upset about anything.

What in hell is going on in the world?

San Diego County woman jumps in front of train
The Associated Press

2:13 a.m. June 6, 2009

DEL MAR, Calif. — Officials say a Del Mar woman committed suicide by jumping in front of a coastal train.

San Diego County Sheriff's Deputy Jeffrey Schmoll says the 58-year-old woman was hit by a southbound Coaster train Friday.

The engineer told investigators she jumped into the train's path.

The area where the woman was hit is posted with "no trespassing" signs.

Her name was not immediately released.

This is so sad. So tragic. What a horrible legacy to leave for your husband and kids. No one seems
to know anything about what would cause her to take such an action.

How is it that we can get to a place where people do these things and don't give off any warning signs?
Can you imagine how lonely she must have felt to be in so much pain that she would do this and nobody--just nobody--had any idea? Could everyone have been clueless? It just leaves so much guilt,
so many questions, so many "if onlys" and "what ifs". It is just so, so sad.

May Laurie rest in peace.

1. I'm so sorry
Edited on Tue Jun-09-09 09:29 AM by Symarip
My buddy/friend did the exact same thing (in nearly the exact same place) 2 years ago. No letter, no reason, no goodbye. He left Hensley's Pub in Carlsbad and threw himself in front of the Coaster.

I'm sorry for your loss.

5. And I am so sorry for yours. From what I've heard, she left no note, either.

2. I am so sorry for your loss.
So sorry.

Please, give those of us who attempt to survive these losses a gift. Dwell not on imagined "legacies" but on beautiful lives, gone too soon.

4. See, that's the thing. It's such a monumental blow. So unexplained.
Her husband is a mess.

I don't know any more details yet, which I'm sure I'll hear before long. The memorial service for her is tomorrow.

We, Class of '69 at La Jolla High School, have a 40th reunion planned in September. Many of
the locals will be at the service.

Hubby and I had planned to take the train from Solana Beach to Los Angeles when we're there.

6. I'm so very sorry...
Suicides do leave behind so much more emotion and trauma for their friends and family. You and Laurie's family are in my thoughts.

Peace and condolences,

backtoblue

8. I went through this several years ago when a close friend of my oldest son
committed suicide by blowing his brains out in a park across from the high school. The boy had
spent the week with us at the beach the previous summer, so we knew him a little better than
most of the kids who come/go from your house.

I was so worried for my son, who was a senior, and about to start final exams.

His parents ended up divorcing.

This boy had been depressed. He'd been on anti-depressants. He was seeing a therapist.

But this, with my friend? No hint. None.

11. My husband wasn't going to either. I still believe him.
Sometimes it just happens.
