9. I do it because I love it
I do it because I have images in my head that need to get out. You are right about not having a set style. Well, first of these pieces were done over a 12 year period, so, inevitably, there will be changes in style. I also bored easily and like to experiment. I don't want to get stuck in one medium or style, because that wouldn't be an accurate reflection of me.

14. You should , Art is a serious matter . and involves alot of technical know-how
in my personal opinion not studying it in an Academic setting is a waste of your budding talent. I agree that some people can get by without school , but those are very rare.

If school is not an option , you should find a mentor , a well established Artist that can pass the "secrets" to you.

Sorry for giving you serious critique rather than gushing.....

by the way , how old are you ?

Edited on Sun Jun-07-09 03:24 PM by Rising Phoenix
And honestly I don't want to know the secrets, I want to have fun, I want to express myself, and I want to learn as I go. I don't care if my art is technically correct......if it were then would it be considered good, because it looks like everybody else's with the same style? Is that what makes art good? I make art to express how I feel and all I want of my work is for it to make the viewer feel something too....good, bad, wonder, disgust. I do not mind a critique, and resent that you implied all I want is gushing, and that you implied duers who do "gush" are mindless drones who will say anything they feel they ought.

Why do you want to know my age? A irrelevant question asked out of the blue, if you ask me?

How old are you?

edit: sorry for any hostility, but that is the vibe I am getting.

18. My age is 31 , I wanted to know your age so I can better asses your style
Age does matter .... it says how much you can grow . Older people are rigid and more set in their ways , It is almost impossible to teach them new stuff. The only reason I bothered is because you do have that seed called "talent" . If I felt your art was worthless I would not have even bothered to comment.

Please RisingPhoenix , don't put words I never said in my mouth , I never said or implied that :" that you implied duers who do "gush" are mindless drones who will say anything they feel they ought."

You posted your Art on a public website ,so it is no more just a matter of personal enjoyment , it becomes Art with a capital A , which warrants feedback.

20. I do apologize for putting words in your mouth.
Edited on Sun Jun-07-09 03:38 PM by Rising Phoenix
That was unfair....I am in quite I snappish mood today. I am 31, as well. And I do appreciate your critique, I just think that art isn't really something that can be taught, beyond beginner techniques and uses of different mediums.

I would like to see some of your art, if you have any available. I'm not meaning that in a snotty way, I am very interested to see your style, and if you went to art school, maybe I could see something in your art that would make me want to study in an academic setting. A picture is worth a thousand words, after all.

Be wary if he offers his services as "mentor." While a class or two might get your juices flowing and help you network a bit, for someone to say that "technical know-how" is involved is just idiotic.

giggle, I will watch out for that. I find I get a lot of juices flowing here on DU. From the artists forum and from other DUers who act as a muse and inspiration for me through their words, poems, images, etc. And all of that can be found in friends and family, and enemies, as well. Networking would be sweet though. :hi:

16. art is a serious matter??
Are you serious?

Then again, I suppose it would be silly to just go 'blatt, blatt, blatt' on my trumpet without knowing anything about fingering or playing a known song or an original composition that had song qualities.

27. I believe it does
Edited on Sun Jun-07-09 03:48 PM by UndertheOcean
you are born with talent , but talent alone does not make good Art , all the truly great artists learned technique from someone else , within a well established style. Even innovation rested on the back of previous work . This is a highly developed human endeavor, not something to be taken lightly as "just happens" if you are lucky enough at birth.

That attitude is highly disrespectful of Art.

29. I am going to leave you with this....
I may not have gone to art school, that does not mean I have not studied art. I study artists whose work intrigues me, not just their pieces but their lives. When I was young I started out by trying to copy the art I liked, and I have built on the techniques I learned doing that. I did not wake up one day and decided to color. It is a life long passion of mine. But, I disagree with the statement that innovation must be rested on someone else's greatness and imagination. True innovation comes from within, true innovation is to make pieces unlike any seen before. I know my art history, that does not make me an artist. I know how to relay perception, shading, proportions and all that, that does not make me an artist. I am an artist because I love it. I am an artist because I create pieces based on my life experience. I am an artist because of how I choose to view the world, and how I relay that vision in my work.

I do not disrespect art. You however, disrespect the artist soul, and that is sad.

So, on my final note, I say that you, Under the Ocean, should take all the classes you want. You can make mediocre copies of someone else's genius ( because a copy can be nothing but mediocre). I will spill my guts upon the page, and hideous or beautiful, it is mine. It is my heart and my art.

Have a great day, I am off to busy myself with something that will not go in circles all night.

30. Ok , let us agree to disagree
there is nothing shameful with that. As long as you feel fulfilled while alive. That is all that really matters. I don't think Van Goth cares about all the adulation his Art gets while lying in his grave.

If it makes you happy , good luck to you ! :)
