1. XR = extended release. 8 hours. Approximately.
The regular adderall went for 4 hours, but ramping things off the bad and then slowing down. The XR formula releases the legalized amphetamine over a more equal period of time...

2. Shouldn't be long then....
Not quite sure what time it was when I took it, but I'd guess at least 8 hours ago. Started another new med (thyroid) yesterday, and got a new more potent than my old script Adderall that I took this morning w/ the thyroid stuff (after researching if that was okay) for the first time.

Then I drank a bunch of espresso (which doesn't normally touch my fatigue, I just like the taste) and didn't eat anything until an hour or so ago when it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to put something in my stomach....

I'm not digging the jittery feeling.

3. Did you just start it?
How many mgs?

It generally takes a person 3-4 days to acclimate to a new medication. Adderall is a good drug. If you think you need it, don't give up on it.

4. I started Adderall around 2 months ago.
Started w/ Ritalin, actually, before that. That made me a touch jittery without having much effect on anything else. This is my 2nd Adderall script. I don't take it every day (try to avoid it, actually) - it's an experiment to see what, if any, effect it may have on my quality of life due to extreme fatigue / brain fog issues. Started w/ 10mg - faintly noticeable, but not enough. Doubled up on the 10s to experiment w/ 20s. Barely more effective than 10. I still have 10s left (as I mentioned I don't take them daily, only if my fatigue is worse than "normal") Just picked up a script yesterday for 30s - which I decided to take today because I was really groggy AND because I don't want to take the first one on a work day not knowing the effect it will have.

I also got and just started 100mcg Synthroid (or the generic equivalent) yesterday - taking the second one this morning. It is my understanding that there will be no noticeable effect from that for at least 2 weeks, more likely a month.

Also waiting on hearing about a sleep lab appt - which depending on the result may make the adderall moot.

5. Okay.
synthroid is the generic. It is also A/B rated, which means it is identical to the brand. You will feel the effects in several weeks and honestly? You won't notice them. All of a sudden you will realize that you're not as tired, not as achy, etc.

Adderall is a great drug, but from what you've described? The brain fog is thyroid related. The thyroid is an amazingly powerful organ. If I were in your shoes? I would wait until my thyroid counts were okay before ratcheting up the Adderall again. Honestly, I would go back to the 20mg dose until you are euthyroid. ( I am guessing you are hypothryoid? Is that correct?) I am as well, but I have been euthyroid (completely controlled) for many years.

Feel free to PM if you wish, Madrone. Unfortunately, I know a great deal about this.

Midlo:hug:
I've been terrified about my daughter's recent health issues...Without going into detail, you just gave me some much needed peace of mind....She's undergoing some testing right now...My daughter also takes Synthroid, and I'm happy that you're doing well...

peace~

15. My pleasure.
I've been on medication for thyroid disease for 17 years. I was diagnosed when my son was an infant. It's scary because you feel as though your entire body is completely going to Hell in a handbasket, but it is a very simple cure.

I feel pretty good considering my age and how busy my life is.

Once your daughter is stable? She won't even remember feeling poorly.

My best to you.

16. Thank you again....
She's been having very strange symptoms, and the neurologist's major concern was the fact that her MD didn't run tests for her thyroid. She has some other issues going on, but he said that was most likely the case. Foggy thinking, fatigue,..etc....I'm upset her MD didn't test...She's been on the same dosage for many years...
I'm certain everything will be fine...
Thank you for your well wishes...

peace~

10. The thyroid RX says Levothyroxin: generic for synthroid
I've had my thyroid function tested over and over again for 12 years - I don't know if it was different this time or if this new doctor has a different opinion on "normal" than the rest. We didn't go over the terminology (it was a quick, after hours phone call to tell me the results and she had to hurry up and get off because there were only 15 mins til the pharmacy closed. She wanted to get the script called in) BUT.... the test that shows the pituitary's "Hey! Send some thyroid hormone! Hey! Hey you! Send more! Hey!" ...lol... was "abnormal." The thyroid hormone test was low but not nearly as low as she expected it to be. She and another doctor discussed it and decided to go ahead and try me on a low dose, based on the level of "Hey you!" and the "not as low as expected" thyroid hormone combined.

As for the Adderall - I view it as an experimental patch for one of my symptoms, not a long term solution. It helps me focus a little better at work on the worst days, but it's no silver bullet and it only helps. It doesn't completely remove the grogginess, fog, or lack of focus.

The plan is to retest my thyroid levels in a month and see how they look after a month of medication. I'm also taking it even more easy than usual on the Adderall (today excluded) because I don't want it in my system when I do the sleep lab, and I'm not sure when that appointment will be scheduled.

As for not noticing the effects..... x( I was hoping to find my eyes SPRING open one morning, LEAP out of bed, and know what it feels like to feel ALIVE for the first time since I can remember. Thanks for peeing in my punchbowl, woman! lol

6. Honestly, when I took it, it took about 8-12 hours for it wear off
Edited on Sat Jun-06-09 09:10 PM by HarukaTheTrophyWife
10 and 20mg doses did absolutely nothing for me (and I'm really tiny). 30mg made me feel tweaked out, which was useful sometimes, but not everyday. I eventually decided to stop taking my ADD meds. I've been off them for a couple years.

11. I think we share experiences when it comes to dosage.
10/20 are somewhat useful but only barely perceptable. The 30 I took today has me feeling tweeked. The weird thing is it's not a USEFUL tweeked. I'm completely sedentary, unmotivated, tired, and still underlying-ly groggy / foggy. My body / mind feel jittery and I could probably talk your ears off, though.

It's REALLY weird to feel sleepy and lazy but that if I start talking I might not stop for the next 4 hours - at the same time!

7. Watch out for the weepiness when it wears off, if you're anything like my stepkid.
That will be the pills, not you.

And listen to Midlo. She knows her beans.

12. I also read that it can make you suicidal, irritable, and/or violent.
Now that's crazy! Luckily I'm consistent enough that if I started emotionally bouncing around the people around me would notice it even if I didn't.

Thanks for the heads up! I didn't know to be on the lookout for weepiness.
