Morrison was so damn sexy. *sigh*

Also, in addition to everyone else already named-

Harry Chapin
Janis Joplin
Patsy Cline

Geeze this thread is depressing.

on edit- Yeah, good idea to finish reading the darn thread and not just the titles before posting.

Haven't seen anyone mention Rick(y) Nelson- loved him when I was young! Apparently, it isn't just Shrub's political enemies who need to stay out of small planes.

I have to agree on SRV. Everytime I drive Interstate 94 between Madison and Milwaukee, I ask for a moment of silence when we pass the crash site.

I would add to the list -

Jim Croce

Not the biggest Janis fan, and i really don't think Slovak added that much to music overall. (I admit i'm not the biggest fan of the Chili Peppers.)

I won't add anyone who'd probably be dead of old age now, anyway. But, i'd add Jaco Pastorius and George Harrison.

I have been saying since 12/12/00, that if Frank Zappa were alive today, that despite the fact that he hated touring (towards the end), that the 2000 Selection would have force him to put all of his crap in a truck and tour.

Cheers

37. Lennon, Marley, Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughn
Paul McCartney (just joking...y'all have heard about the "Paul is Dead" thing, I hope; otherwise, you won't get the joke).

Seriously, I was devastated when John Lennon was shot. Oddly, I even woke up early (around 5 am) the morning after...as a high school student who always got up late, this was very unusual for me.

I turned on my radio and scanned the dial looking for something to listen to when I heard "A Day in the Life." Cool, one of my favorite Beatle tunes. I lay there in the dark listening as the song's final cacophony crashes in that thundering piano chord and the DJ said somberly, "John Lennon, dead at age 40."

:-(

52. Phil Ochs and Sandy Denny
Phil's political stuff is pretty pedestrian compared to other artists although he had a good handful of songs in that category that rank up there at the top.

Personally, I found the more personal and experimental stuff he did after leaving Elecktra to be more individualistic and less dated and it would have been interesting to see where he would have gone had his talent not dried up in the late 60's.

-------------------------

Sandy Denny- Only just one of the best female voices of her time and one great songwriting talent as well.

A shame that most people probably only really know her as the writer of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" and have only heard her as the background vocalist on "Battle of Evermore.

74. I'm gonna say Kurt Cobain.
Nirvana would've been the next-generation beatles in terms of popularity if the guy didn't escape from that California detox centre in March 1994.

92. Very underrated
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 09:47 PM by jobycom
Cobain was genius. When the Beatles first came out, no "experts" could understand why such simple ditties and bad harmonies could be thought of as music. Throughout their careers, Lennon had terrible rythym, Ringo was an average drummer, and Paul couldn't sing a lick. George Harrison became a great guitarist, though.

Nirvana was like that. The whole was greater than the sum of the parts. Cobain had a passion and a genius for music that cut away a lot of the garbage that mediocrities dress their music up with. "Experts" ridiculed him, but missed the point. He could connect musically. It wasn't an intellectual exercise for him, it was just about the music, the feel and the sound and the emotion.

Sad sad loss.

84. No ELVIS? Can't have that!

And if I was only allowed to pick one more, it'd be John Lennon.

If I were allowed to have spared even more, most of the people listed above would be on the list.

Stan Rogers was a tremendous baritone-voiced folk singer from Canada who died in a plane crash in 1984 or 1985. Sad.
