Two girls were killed by carbon monoxide poisioning literally right down the street from my in-laws
We turned into their community yesterday and there were news trucks out front. The police had the end of the street blocked off, and they were towing out the car that apparently had been left running in the garage and caused the deaths.

Very tragic and disturbing. Two 11 year olds, one was over at the other's house for a sleep over.

1. Someone left their car running in the garage?
What a horrible, horrible tragedy.

But whoever did that is a fucking idiot.

6. Yeah, I don't understand it at all.
Why do you leave your car running in a closed garage? It doesn't make any sense. And how does a car not shut off?

15. If my car did that? I'd back it out and call a mechanic and let it run
until it ran out of gas. In fact, BoyM's room is over the garage and I have carbon monoxide detectors all over the place due to that.

I would never even fathom letting my car run in the garage. Has this woman never seen a movie where that is the preferred method of suicide?

Sometimes I forget how stupid people truly are.

2. That's so sad. I wish the Mom had called someone to
help her when she couldn't get her car to turn off, if that is what happened. I read the story online and it said the key was stuck in the on position. They also say that when the rescue squad came, the keys were not in the car and the car wasn't running.

8. The Mom said she couldn't turn the car off and that she couldn't remove the key.
So she apparently left it running inside her garage, a really dumb move. CNN has the story on their US news south region. It says she's hospitalized too.

11. Yeah, I saw that, it really makes me wonder.
Maybe she was able to get the car turned off later but it's just strange in the first place that she left it running inside her garage. If she had no one to call to find out how to handle it, she should have just left it outside.

5. That is very sad.
If they had had a carbon monoxide alarm, those girls would still be alive.

14. Remote start gone floogy?
But a flue gas leak on the heating system could do it too. So will running a generator (power outage, rv) too close to, or in the building/breathing space.
Joyce Standridge just did an excellent collumn in Speedway Illustrated on this issue.
CO poisioning has ended some careers in motorsports (NASCAR's Rick Mast, "Jade Grenade" shoe Ted Thomas) and is a plauge in cold climates.
The new alarms are cheap, and work ace (unless you live somewhere like Chicago, where summertime CO levels are high enough to setoff the detector).
