5. I find it very strange to vote "both"
My mother died 34 years ago, at age 33. My father died January 10, 2008, when his small plane crashed.

It's so weird to say "my dad is dead." Just weird.

8. both are dead
my mom died in '94, sudden heart attack. she was 64. she took care of her parents and a couple of aunts and uncles while they died lingering deaths from cancer, quick heart attack was the way she wanted to go.

My dad died in 2007 a couple of days before his 84th birthday. he was in hospital for 3 weeks, knew the end was near and assured my brother and me that he was "ready".

If I think about it too hard I miss them but when I think about it just enough I'm glad I had them as long as I did. both of them were my best friends and lots of fun.

20. Dad passed on in '92... Mom's still around... wish it was the other way around.
Y'all can crucify me for this, but Dad was a good guy. Ex-military, so he expected self-discipline, but he was generally supportive of us kids, always went ot our games/plays/etc...

Mom was a brain-chemically-induced abusive monster in my childhood (to me only... not to my younger brother, or to my older half-sibs), and since Dad's death and her remarriage, she has gone from simply conservative with racist undertones to a complete fundie asshat, and i have as little contact with her as i can get away with.

27. Lost my mom to breast cancer in January 1969; she was 48...
My dad remarried and was lucky to have 38 years with a wonderful woman until she died at the age of 90 last year. My dad is 91, and still going strong. We talk politics on the phone several times a week; he watches Olbermann and Maddow regularly; subscribes to Jim Hightower's newsletter etc.( I'm lucky here too; I read about so many DUers with rightwing/fundie etc family members..... calling someone a republican was an insult in my family) Besides an amazingly sharp mind, he does a half hour almost every day on the exercycle, on which he has the wheels at the highest possible tension ( although he pedals pretty slowly); says anything less is too easy. And he's been through a triple bypass, prostate cancer ( cancer-free for 20 years) and has a pacemaker.

32. Yep, same for my dad--super careful about what he eats
red meat and sweets are extremely rare for him ( I bet he has a steak or a burger maybe once every 5 years). He's 100% convinced that's why he survived his emergency bypass. Glad to hear this about your grandparents.

46. My parents died in my early 20s. Just missed being an orphan.
Never really got to know them. My parents were orphans as their parents died when they were toddlers. My dad was an only child and my mother had a twin sister.
I have two brothers and a couple of cousins thousands of miles away. So my extended family is pretty small.
