How do you get a majority of your music these days?

I either buy the CD at Hastings (Used or New) or on iTunes (I just purchased the new Green Day on iTunes last night and love it).
Just curious about the trends here.

1. I've got so many fucking CDs I can't listen to them all in a year.

I don't buy music anymore. Frankly, there isn't that much worth buying anyway - it sucks.

You do have to do a lot of digging to uncover it, I admit. But it's worth the effort. I use Limewire and my local library.

2. I listen to the radio.

I don't remember the last time I bought music. I don't own any portable music device (other than a radio) and I've never downloaded a song.

If it's someone I really like, I buy the physical CD.

4. Buy used... local shop

There's a great shop in downtown MoTown that sells used DVDs, CDs, and video games and stuff... I'm in there pretty frequently to look around, and when the mood strikes me that i need something new in my collection, i check there first.

Otherwise, i listen to a lot of internet radio and podcasts.

5. CD's via an online vender.

My music collection grows glacially. When I am interested in buying something, I can get it cheaper online than from any of the big retailers.

7. I buy CDs then burn them and download them onto my MP3

There's something to be said about buying a CD as opposed to downloading. You have that feeling of anticipation when you are opening up that plastic rapper that can't be matched by simply downloading something off the net.

8. I still buy CD's

Either online or at Best Buy or Barnes and Noble locally. Sadly, all of the local music stores that sold new CD's are gone, although there is a music store that sells vinyl and used CD's that I frequent.

I still haven't warmed up to the idea of paying for music downloads (as opposed to buying physical albums) and don't see myself doing so unless the industry/public kills off the physical album format and I'm forced to...

9. I buy CDs and Vinyl albums at my local shops...

I will only go online if I cant find something locally, and then I find the CD or Vinyl album, not a digital download.

I stay away from the big box stores, they very rarely have anything I want.

11. It depends...

If I want some Flaming Lips, Steely Dan, or King Crimson, I'll hit the neighborhood CD shop first. If that doesn't work, I'll try Borders.

On the other hand, if I'm looking for something harder to find like Lustmord, Chingon, or vintage S.U.N. Project, there's no substitute for shopping on-line.

13. Amazon music store

both mp3's and cd's when they go on sale or are free. Don't buy iTunes unless it's a gift card (I do use an iPod).
The teens are good w/finding emerging artists with free music, too.

15. I buy directly from artists, high-return-to-the-artist distributors, thrift stores, etc.

But mostly I'm a creature of the vinyl and cassette age. I ripped most of my old vinyl and cassettes to mp3 a very long time ago and I usually enjoy that it sounds like vinyl or cassette -- whenever I listen to the music of my youth it sounds exactly like the music of my youth because it is. Most "remastered" CD's or digital rips of old music express some modern sound engineer's concept of digital perfection, often obliterating the original artists' and engineers' very sophisticated understanding of the limitations of analog media.

I'm not interested in expensive turntables, tube amplifiers, and modern vinyl, probably because I never had sophisticated stereo equipment. My cassettes and records were digitized using the same equipment I once played them on. If I was older and had a lot of 78 records that I used to play on a wind-up Victrola I'd probably put a microphone on a wind up Victrola to rip them.

I buy a CD every now and then. But after I rip it into iTunes and I'm throwing it on the Stack Of CD's I Never Ever Play Again, I feel kinda dumb.

Because it's harder to find space for my CD collection, some downloads make sense.
