Some baby birds fell onto my concrete front porch.
I came home from the doctor and pharmacy (my son has pneumonia in late May---wtf?) and they were on the ground moving around, but they are young----not ready to fly for a bit.

The parents are house wrens who built a nest under an eve on the porch. It was about a seven foot drop. I got out the step ladder, spruced up the nest so they would be more centered and placed them back in with a spade. The parents came back almost immediately, are feeding them and I see them moving around.

Do you think they have a chance after such a hard fall? I feel so bad.

1. Aw. You did good.
I think if they're moving and feeding, that's a very good sign.

I'll never forget something I once saw at a motel. A nest had fallen (also onto concrete) and the babies had died. The parent birds were hopping around and squawking and frantic. It was awful. :(

That story makes me sad, too.

2. Could you put some dry leaves or a rumpled- up tarp on the porch
below the nest? Maybe they instinctively flapped their little wings enough to slow their fall. Because baby birds have to take that big leap at some point it would be nice to have a cushion below (also easier for you to clean up bird poo...leaves="birdie litter" LOL.

I'm off to do that right now. I'm going to use some old bath towels. Thank you!
